Friends Without Borders (FWB) is a charity that originally starting by supporting and befriending asylum seekers, refugees and immigration detainees. It centred around befriending detainees within the Haslar Immigration Removal Centre (Haslar IRC in Gosport). Now we are based at All Saints Drop In: Since 2007 Friends Without Borders has been providing a welcoming community space for asylum seek

ers and refugees in the local area of Portsmouth. The All Saints drop-in runs every Thursday morning out of All Saints Church Commercial Road, Portsmouth, and our focus is to support refugees and asylum seekers through their application for Leave to Reman and eventually gaining status to live in the UK. This weekly drop in is where we offer advocacy, or referral on to a qualified immigration solicitor, English classes, social engagements and a welcome hot drink and food and a chat with someone. We also support refugees/asylum seekers with weekly financial support and if required food vouchers. We also have close links with other organisations who support refugees and asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants. We have Citizens Advice at our drop in to offer relevant advice or signposting to a solicitor. Our local labour MP Stephen Morgan attends monthly to assist with liaising with the Home Office for claims which seem to be "stuck" in the system, or just to listen. We aim to reduce isolation and social exclusion by enabling clients to negotiate bureaucratic systems which they may not understand and to build networks, both professional and personal. Access to Justice: Getting good legal advice has always been important to asylum seekers and immigrants but recently it has become much more difficult because of cut backs in the legal aid system. There is now only one solicitor in Portsmouth taking such cases, there is one in Southampton and one in Brighton. In response to this Friends Without Borders has started a new project – Access to Justice - and opened a new office at All Saints. the Friends Without Borders can take on, and give advice about, a range of immigration cases,.

Our Story

Friends Without Borders (FWB) is a charity that provides support and befriending services for asylum seekers, refugees and immigration detainees. Our work centres around a drop-in advice service for refugees and asylum seekers in Portsmouth in the All Saints Church Hall on Monday and Thursday mornings, and a legal advice service called Access to Justice. All Saints Drop In: Since 2007 Friends Without Borders also provides a welcoming community space for asylum seekers and refugees in the local area of Portsmouth. The All Saints drop-in provides support, problem solving and socialising opportunities for those who attend. This service aims to reduce isolation and social exclusion by enabling clients to negotiate bureaucratic systems which they may not understand and to build networks, both professional and personal. Access to Justice: Getting good legal advice has always been important to asylum seekers and immigrants but recently it has become much more difficult because of cut backs in the legal aid system. In response to this Friends Without Borders started a new project – Access to Justice - in March 2014 and opened a new office at All Saints. Friends Without Borders can take on, and give advice about, a range of immigration cases, not just bail.
