Next week we will be hosting a PhD researcher, who will be interviewing local people about life on the island. It's a great project, and we still have some interview slots for Thursday 25th and Friday 26th remaining.

"Participants could be anyone with memories about the island industries from around the 80s until today, so anyone who moved here around that time or has lived on Portland their whole life. I am focusing on the economic shifts that happened with the closure of the Naval Base and changes in quarry practice."

Please get in touch by messaging, popping in or calling 01305 823789. The office is open 10am to 2pm, Monday to Friday.

***FRANCE QUARRY UPDATE***

HELP US SECURE A CRITICAL, MUCH-LOVED, AND THREATENED GREEN SPACE FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS ON PORTLAND.

URGENT APPEAL
We are incredibly close to securing two acres at France Quarry for Portland’s community (and those who visit the island); however, we are still £1,470 short of the £5,000 estimate required to cover the upfront, non-refundable legal fees associated with the purchase.

Can you help by donating? Even a small amount will make a big difference in helping us protect this special place now and for generations to come.

DEADLINE FOR DONATIONS IS 30TH JUNE.

https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/france-quarry-portland-community-purchase

PLEASE NOTE
Future Portland has collected money in two ways:

PLEDGES - This money will be used to cover the purchase price of the land itself + the immediate maintenance/improvements costs.

DONATIONS - This money will be used to cover the legal fees associated with the purchase. It is separate from the pledges.

The original Crowdfunder campaign was set up for donations. To date, we've raised £1,850 (£1,950 less an approximate £100 transaction fee). This amount, combined with our Art Auction profits of £1,680, has left us £1,470 short of our £5,000 target.

Once this target is met, we can begin calling in the pledges.

Help us secure a critical, unique and much-loved, but threatened, green space for current and future generations on Portland.

Congratulations to all the young people that successfully completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Expedition this weekend. They navigated, hiked, camped and cooked and had fun with friends, fires and marshmallows, whilst testing their resilience, perseverance and teamwork.

Again a huge thank you to all the volunteers who supported our incredible young people, we couldn't have delivered the award without them. Also to our partners at Atlantic Academy Portland.

We have a few volunteer spaces available to help deliver our Bronze section next year, and would love to hear from anyone interested in joining - particularly from any men, as we currently have a predominantly female team.

Wonderful initiative to raise awareness about County Lines, an issue that affects young people, their families and communities in the hardest ways.

The High Sheriff of Dorset is to walk more than 200 miles around the county’s boundary this summer, including a leg through Purbeck, to raise awareness of a drugs threat to local children. Helena Conibear, who took up her unpaid, non political role in March 2026, will begin the 216 mile challenge
