Do One Thing (DOT) is all about nature and environmental, and has been created to help local residents support Portland’s amazing natural environment.

Through simple changes and activities we can help protect our Island for ourselves and future generations.

Making changes locally is a great way to start, whether at home or in school, through a local club, across a single neighbourhood or even within the community as a whole.

To get you started, we’ve put together a list of 101 different ways you and your family, friends, and community can help tackle climate change and pollution and, in the process, support and protect Portland’s natural environment and biodiversity.

We’ve tried to include lots of different ideas to ensure there are options for everyone, based on preference, cost and achievability. This way, even if you only Do One Thing you’ll still make a positive impact.

See 101 DOTs for Portland: https://bit.ly/3pqvIfO

We’ve also launched the Do One Thing Reward Card. The card works by giving you a stamp every time you do something positive for Portland’s natural environment. Collect 10 stamps and you get a reward.

The process is simple – just send us a photo of you in action (email: [email protected] with DOT in the subject line) and then pop into the ICA office to get your stamp (you can also pick up cards there too).

To make things easier we’ll be posting regular DOT ideas and challenges on this page. We’ll also be running special activities and events over the coming year. Simply join the page to keep track of the new content we post.

Thanks to Levana Coker for sending in these shots of Kiahola-Joan and Zico, who took part in the recent b-side and Island Community Action - ICA Environment Day.

At the event they picked up a Do One Thing for Portland reward card and decided to get themselves an extra stamp each by doing a mini-litter pick in their local community.

Well done to them both. We look forward to seeing you in the ICA office to get their reward card stamped.

***FAMILY FUN ENVIRONMENT FAYRE***

Looking for something naturally fabulous to do this weekend? Look no further.

b-side and Island Community Action are joining forces to deliver a special Environment Fayre to celebrate Portland’s amazing environment and showcase some great ideas for how you can help support our natural world.

The event will offer the following FREE activities - a Bug to Birds nature challenge (build a bug hotel, plant a pollinator for butterflies, create a bird food heart and make a toad about). You can also try out the Fish and Strips recycled sculpture activity, foraged art and stone carving.

On top of that, there will be opportunities to get close up with a host of colourful creatures, from ants and spiders to beetles and snakes, courtesy of Ants on a Rock. And if that’s not enough, you’ll be able to create your own bee costumes and Get Buzzy with the Bee Circus and peep inside a beehive to discover what they do on their days off.

And just when you thought it was all over, you can find out about Eden Portland and Nottingham Trent University’s new Sign the Tree initiative.

On top of the free activities, there are three bookable (paid for) activities – a Herb Walk with local herbalist Andrew Cowling (£5), a BioBlitz and Family Foraging activity with Bushwhacker Tours (£5/children free) and a Cyanotype workshop (£3), creating printed art from sunlight.

The event, which forms part of our larger ‘How to Look After an Island’ initiative, will also highlight the upcoming Great Big Green Week - the UK’s biggest community action event to protect nature and tackle climate change and environmental issues.

This years Fayre is part-funded by The Dorset Performing Arts Fund (via Dorset Community Foundation), the National lottery community fund, the Great Big Green Week (via Save the Children) and Arts Council England.
