10 Day Deadline:

With 10 days to go before the closing date for the next District training weekend (18-20 September, closing on 14 August) at Weymouth National Boat Centre we are concerned that 4 of the 7 planned courses are AT RISK of cancellation due to insufficient bookings.

Courses at risk:
- 1180515 - SCC Basic Peer Educator (Cadet)
- 1180503 - RYA NSS Level 2 Dinghy (CFAV)
- 1180475 - SCC Working With Young People (CFAV)
- 1180481 & 1180484 - First Aid at Work (CFAV) and Advanced First Aid (Cadet)

Of particular worry is the Working With Young People course which is open to CFAVs from ANY District. There is a huge backlog of CFAVs across South West Area Sea Cadets so any cancelled course makes that situation worse. If you need this training, wherever you volunteer, please apply: you'll be made most welcome.

Basic Peer Educator is the gateway course that enables participants to meet the pre-requisites for AC-LC advancement. Even for AC specialists this is a hugely valuable course.

First Aid is a massively valuable life skill for young and old alike. This course is commercially available at costs ranging from £140-£400 depending on the provider, plus VAT. Earned through Sea Cadets, the contribution charged to learners is minimal. Again, places are available to learners within the District and without. Take every opportunity to develop.

Finally, a note to Courses Booking Officers: pre-requisites will be checked on the Action Date specified on WESTMINSTER. Any candidates not meeting the published pre-requisites will be rejected. There are too many Admin Notes being added saying that such-and-such a cadet will achieve the pre-reqs by the Start Date. That's not good enough. Pre-reqs by the Action Date or candidates will be rejected.

All courses have been reviewed and pre-reqs amended in some cases for changes noted in the published SOTRs.

What a great weekend we've had at the Sea Cadet South West Area Sailing and Windsurfing Regatta held in Weymouth. Some great on-water skills! Leading Cadet Austin came 1st in the 4.8m Windsurfing category, LC Lewis took 3rd place in the RS Zest Dinghy Class, and Cadet 1st Imogen and Cadet Jade won the Junior RS Quest Dinghy Class! Fabulous results!

We also had our Powerboat Handling Team presented with their Silver Medals from the Area Combined Regatta that took place 2 weeks ago at Port Talbot!

Somerset and Dorset District won the overall Area Sailing and Windsurfing Regatta - just brilliant!

A good weekend all round. 😁
