Huge Congratulations to our Unit Powerboat Handling Team for winning today's Somerset and Dorset District Competition held at Portland! 😁 Great boat driving skills from Leading Cadet Daniel and brilliant crewing by Cadets Alexander and Jasmine, along with great team work, saw them competently achieve all on-water skills tasks in a RIB within the time limit, to lift the trophy for 1st place! 😁 Well Done all!

A big thank you goes to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy for kindly allowing us to use their facilities as the venue for the Competition. 😁

Well, we've had a busy week!

It started last Friday, with CPO Damien Hawkins, Leading Cadet George, Cadet 1st Imogen and Cadet Zander conducting Ceremonial Sunset for an Annual Event held by the Portland Branch of the Royal Navy Sailing Association at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, during what was a gorgeous sunny evening!

The following day, CPO Hawkins was one of the judges at the South West Area Band Competition held at HMS Flying Fox in Bristol, on what would have been a very hot and sticky day in his No.1 uniform!

Over the weekend PPO Oakley Harvell successfully passed the SCC Rowing Instructor Course (and has already since put his shiny new qualification to good use!), and Cadet Miles passed his RYA YSS Stage 4 dinghy sailing course - a great effort!

Leading Cadet Daniel and Cadets Alexander and Jasmine did some Powerboat handling training to prepare for the District Competition this Sunday (very Good Luck to them!), and CI Gavin Poulloin successfully passed his RYA Safety Boat course - fabulous!

We had a great evening afloat on Tuesday night, with sailing, powerboating and rowing in fantastic weather, which held for our sports and BBQ night on Thursday. πŸ™‚

And to round things off, we had an outstanding ship's visit today to Germany Navy Frigate FGS SACHSEN (meaning Saxon) whilst she was alongside in Portland Port, where we had a tour of the Bridge, the Operations Room, the Weapons System, the Galley, etc., which gave the Cadets a really good insight into her air-defence role and life onboard a modern warship.

What a fab week! 😁

Big Congratulations to one of our Adult Volunteers PPO (SCC) Katie Sadler on achieving her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, which she celebrated with other recipients at a Gold Award Event in the Gardens of Buckingham Palace this afternoon. The short bursts of rain didn't dampen what was a lovely day, with proud Auntie Lt (SCC) Rachel Harris (the Unit Commanding Officer) also able to attend as her chosen guest! Well Done Katie!

What a lovely Divisions night we had this week! We had a visit by Mr Ian Brooke who had recently donated a bugle to us - it dated from 1905, and has now seen new life by being used by Cadets learning to be bugle / drummers! Mr Brooke had been an Officer in our Unit T.S. Penn in 1972/3, and he has the picture of himself in his No.1 uniform to prove it! That was back when the Unit was based in a wooden hut on the site that is now Osprey Leisure Centre, shown in the pictures. The same sword that Mr Brooke had when he was a Sub-Lieutenant Sea Cadets is now being used by Lieutenantt (SCC) Rachel Harris RNR, the current Commanding Officer of T.S. Penn. What a fabulous link down the years of history of our Unit!

During the evening, Ian gave a presentation to all the Cadets on his Career, including his time spent in the Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service based out of Portland Dockyard, as well as about his time with Sea Cadets.

Our Leading Cadets then gave a presentation on the World War 1 Battlefields Tour that the Unit had undertaken a couple of months ago to Ypres, in Belgium.

The evening was rounded off by Mr Brooke presenting Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award Certificates to Leading Cadets Lewis, Austin, Daniel and George, and also to PPO (SCC) George Harris.

A great evening all round!

What a busy weekend we've all had! Saturday morning was our excellent fundraising Coffee Morning in Easton Methodist Hall - a huge thank you to our fabulous Committee for their hard work, and special thanks to Billy and Betty as ever manning the book and bric-a-brac stalls with enthusiasm, Ally for superb help in the kitchen and Amanda for donating the Easter Hamper that was simply stunning! The Cadet helpers were brilliant too, and many thanks to those who donated cakes and tombola / raffle / books for the stalls. And of course, a huge thank you to those who came and enjoyed a good cup of tea / coffee / cake! 😁

We had Junior Cadets Dom and Ellie have a fab time at the Somerset and Dorset District Juniors weekend at the National Sea Cadet training centre in Weymouth, where they did loads of activities, including making cool sock puppets and a Seamanship Knot Board! The weekend was supported by Lt Harris, Petty Officers Jordan and Poppy, and PPO Oakley - many thanks for giving up your spare time to allow the Cadets to have such a great experience!

And we had successful passes of the Sea Cadet Swim Test by Cadets Jasmine and Charlie, and Junior Cadets Nicholas and Will - they're now ready to go boating when the warmer weather arrives!

A great weekend all round! 😁
