100 & First Foundation

100 & First Foundation We drive social change for one of societies most excluded groups. When most people think about helping others, prisoners aren’t often the ‘others’ they choose.

Creating a society in which young people who are, or at risk of being, part of the criminal justice system have the same chance of succeeding, as with everyone else, regardless of their starting point. You only have to read the news to discover that most people think prisoners are ‘bad people’ who have brought their situation on themselves. How easy it is to judge from a distance! Over half of peo

ple released from prison are reconvicted within a year, many are back inside within a few weeks. 100 & First Foundation’s model was established on the premise that it is often not the lack of ambition, but rather a lack of confidence, knowledge and continuity of support that prevents prison-leavers from overcoming challenges and realising their potential, ultimately reoffending. When working with our people, we model stability amid the chaos. Through consistency of support both sides of the gate, we enable our people to make a tangible, lasting change in how they think about and participate in society.

Huge congratulations to Jay Stokes, Delivery Manager at HMP Portland for 100 & First Foundation, on receiving an award from the High Sheriff of Dorset in recognition of his great and valuable service to the community 👏

Jay’s work delivering our courses inside HMP Portland and mentoring lads once they’re through the gate is changing lives every day — proving that with the right support, real change is possible.

“I am hugely honoured to receive such an amazing award from the High Sheriff. I truly believe that any person is capable of change, and that it just takes the right level of support for people to fulfil their potential in society. This isn’t just a reflection of my work with our beneficiaries, but of all our work as a team. No man is an island. I can’t wait to continue delivering our work and expanding so we can help more people, regardless of their starting point.”

A powerful reflection of the impact being made — and just the beginning 💪

Following on from our funding announcement earlier this week… 📣

With unrestricted funding from the Co-op Foundation, we will expand our work supporting young people at risk of, or involved in, the youth justice system. 🤝

Over the next five years, this £150,000 will help us grow our programmes across the charity, helping reach more young people, and provide consistent, high-quality mentoring rooted in lived experience. 📈

This funding gives us the flexibility to respond to real needs, build stronger relationships, and create more opportunities for young people to re-engage, reshape their identity, and move towards positive futures. 🌱

We’re incredibly grateful to the Co-op Foundation for their trust and support. 🙌

We are excited to announce we have been awarded an unrestricted grant of £150,000 over five years 🎉 from the Co-op Foundation as part of their Future Communities Fund 🙌

The Co-op Foundation’s Future Communities Fund supports organisations that are working with young people with experience of the youth justice system to re-engage with their communities 🤝💬

This week was an important one for us at 100 & First Foundation 💛✨

We brought together Melique and Ash, who both came down for the meeting 🙌, alongside one of our trustees, George Mayhew 🤝.

The focus? Our newly formed Board of Beneficiaries 🗣️ — made up of individuals who have been through our programmes and are now helping us shape them for the future.

Because who better to guide the evolution of our courses than the people who’ve lived them? 🎯

This is what meaningful change looks like:
👂 Listening
📚 Learning
🔁 Improving
🤝 Growing — together

From participant ➡️ to voice.
From experience ➡️ to impact.

Proud of the honesty, insight and courage in the room 💬💛

“Kindness begins with understanding that we all struggle.” – Charles F. Glassman

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day 💛

At 100 & First Foundation, we see every day how powerful understanding can be. Behind behaviour is a story. Behind silence is something unspoken. Behind struggle is often a young person just trying to cope.

Kindness isn’t soft. It’s powerful.
It’s patience.
It’s empathy.
It’s choosing to see the person, not just the behaviour.

Today, choose understanding. You never know what someone is carrying. 💛

Four weeks. Four foundations. One powerful reset. 💛

At the 100 & First Foundation Resilience Sports Academy inside HMP Portland, we use sport to unlock something deeper — especially for young men with neurodiverse needs who have often felt misunderstood in traditional systems.

Each week builds intentionally:

🤝 Week 1: Teamwork – Building trust, communication, and belonging.

💪 Week 2: Resilience – Developing tools to regulate, respond, and reset.

🚀 Week 3: The Future – Creating clarity, direction, and realistic next steps.

🧭 Week 4: Values – Understanding identity, strengths, and personal standards.

For many participants — particularly those with ADHD, autism, or other neurodivergent profiles — structure, movement, and clear expectations create the safety needed to engage.

Sport is the vehicle.

Understanding is the key.

Identity is the outcome.

This is rehabilitation rooted in strengths, not labels. 💛

🧠 Children’s Mental Health Week 🧠

Mental health isn’t just about what’s going on inside a young person’s head — it’s shaped by their experiences, environment, and whether they feel seen and supported.

At 100 & First Foundation, we work with young people who’ve faced disruption, exclusion, or trauma. For them, support starts with trust, routine, and relationships.

💛 Safe spaces
💛 Consistent adults
💛 Confidence, resilience & belief

💙 Blue Monday 💙
Often called the “most difficult day of the year”, today can feel heavy for many.

At 100 & First Foundation, we see first-hand how tough days, moments, and circumstances can shape lives — especially for young people facing exclusion, uncertainty, or setbacks. But we also see something just as powerful: hope, resilience, and change.

If today feels hard, please know:
💛 You are not weak
💛 You are not alone
💛 And this moment does not define your future

Through mentoring, education, and consistent support, we help people take small but meaningful steps forward — because progress doesn’t come from one big breakthrough, but from showing up again and again.

✨ Even the hardest days pass. And brighter ones always follow.
If today is a 1%, that’s still enough to keep going.
