Aveton Gifford

Aveton Gifford Aveton Gifford is a small rural village in the South Hams of Devon. It lies at the head of the estuary of the River Avon.

It receives its name from this river and also from the family of Giffard who held the manor. Walter Giffard came across with William the Conqueror and helped with the Domesday Book. The correct pronunciation of the name is a source of continuing and fruitless debate, the alternatives are 'Awton Jifford', 'Averton Gifford' or varying combinations of the two. Today, it is frequently known locally as 'AG', a simple solution to the problem.

No painting tonight!
Thank you very much indeed to all the volunteers who’ve come down to help with painting our hall. We won’t be doing it tonight (Wednesday), but weather permitting, there will be more painting sessions on Thursday and Friday this week at the same times (from 6.30)

Please can the parking spaces beside the hall be kept free, just for tomorrow - Wednesday - so that the gutters can be pressure washed before the fascia boards are painted

This includes our residents in AG as well -
We are invited to come along tomorrow evening to hear about the new proposed community “Bigbury Turbine Project” at the Memorial Hall, 7.00 pm.
This replaces last year's project which was presented by Octopus Energy. It would now be an entirely community owned turbine - where all profits are focussed on local community benefits.
Please come to ask questions and make suggestions.

This is not a drop in session. It starts at 7.00 pm and will end around 8.00 pm but can go on longer if needed.
