What a day! 🎣💙

Our young fishers had some fantastic first catches today, including mackerel and bass – and a few were even big enough to keep! 🙌

But what we loved most was hearing what happened afterwards. One young fisher took his mackerel home, cooked it and enjoyed eating mackerel for the very first time. How brilliant is that? 💙

And the feedback says it all:

“He is loving it, can’t wait for tomorrow, having great fun and making friends, learning lots!”🎣

Creating new experiences, learning about our seas and hopefully inspiring the next generation of young fishers. 🌊

Our latest Devon Young Fishers have set off this morning on our sea fishing course for beginners from Salcombe!

Today is about settling in, making friends, learning safety at sea, knots, baits and casting techniques - ready for fishing over the next couple of days!

If you want to give sea fishing a go (or, know a young person that does?), we have a couple of places left on our final summer course-

Our young fishers have been getting stuck in, learning new skills and, as you can see, bringing in some fantastic catches! 🐟📸

We still have a couple of places left on our summer beginners courses if any young fishers fancy giving sea fishing a go!

A brilliant day at the South West Sardine Festival in Brixham. 🎣

Our Devon Young Fishers took to the stage to share their voices, celebrate the people and places behind our fishing communities, and remind everyone that the future of the industry depends on creating opportunities for young people now.

Jemma spoke about why it is so important to get young people out on the water early — building confidence, practical skills and an understanding of sustainability, marine life and the many careers that exist across our coastal communities.

From the harbour atmosphere and charcoal-grilled sardines to inspiring conversations and meeting people who care deeply about British seafood, this was a day our young people will not forget.

Thank you to everyone who made space for the next generation and helped show what a future in fishing can look like. The festival brought together chefs, fishers and advocates to celebrate sardines, sustainability and South Devon’s fishing heritage.

Our newest young fishers have been learning new skills, building confidence on the water, and we've already seen some fantastic first catches! 🐟🙌

With more courses running throughout August and September, there's still time to join us.

🚤 Congratulations to our latest PB2 graduates! 🎉

This month, another fantastic group of Devon Young Fishers in Salcombe successfully completed their RYA Powerboat Level 2 (PB2) course.

Over the course, they developed practical boating skills and built confidence on the water.

But don't just take our word for it...

💙 "He couldn't stop talking about it all weekend. An amazing experience for them!"

💙 "He had the best weekend! They learnt so much and he feels confident to take a boat out now, which is amazing!"

Feedback like this means the world to us.

At Devon Young Fishers, we're passionate about giving young people opportunities to learn new skills, grow in confidence and develop a lifelong respect for the sea. Whether they go on to become commercial fishers, work in the marine industry or simply enjoy being out on the water, we're proud to be part of their journey.

🎣 Another fantastic evening on the water for Devon Young Fishers! 🌊

Last week, we welcomed another brilliant group of young people aboard Our Joe Charters for our very first Brixham session.

Our newest Devon Young Fishers got stuck into:
⚓ Sea safety
🪢 Knot tying
🎣 Learning how to use rods and reels
🌊 Casting techniques
🐟 Their first taste of sea fishing
..and to top it all off, we even landed a bass! 🙌

Watching our young fishers grow in confidence from the moment they step aboard to making their first casts is exactly why Devon Young Fishers exists. Every knot tied, every cast made and every fish caught is another step towards inspiring the next generation to appreciate, understand and care for our incredible marine environment.

A huge thank you to Our Joe Charters for another fantastic session and for sharing their knowledge and passion with our young fishers.

We can't wait to see everyone back on the water soon! 💙

🎣 Our first Paignton Young Fishers trip! 🚤

Tonight, our fishers headed out with Our Joe Charters for their first introduction to sea fishing — and what a beautiful evening it was to begin exploring fishing on the water...

The fish may have been playing hard to get, but we still managed to catch a small scad, whiting and mackerel… and were treated to an incredible visit from a pod of common dolphins! 🐬

Fishing is about so much more than what you catch. It’s about learning new skills, building confidence, spending time outdoors and discovering everything our local waters have to offer.

By all accounts, our first Paignton session was a great success — and we think these smiles say it best! 💙

A huge thank you to Our Joe for helping us give the next generation of young fishers such a brilliant first experience.
