πŸ¦‡ Recently, we welcomed nearly 30 adults and children to our free Bat Detecting walk at Albert Village Lake!

Local wildlife experts Joe and Alyson Kirkwood led the walk and started with insights on what bats eat, and that their social behaviour and life cycle is more akin to elephants than their genetics!

Using bat detectors, we were successful in β€œhearing” and seeing at least two species of bat. The Common Pipistrelle Bat, which often flies around woodland and houses, and the Daubenton’s Bat which flies over water.

This lovely photo was taken by attendee Julie Buchan πŸ“Έ

Thank you to all who attended, and special thanks to Joe and Alyson for this fantastic outing!

⚠️ The Energy Price Cap will increase by 4% from October - on top of July's increase (13%). This means bills are nearly 17% higher than in April.

From the same date, VAT on electricity charges will go from 5% to 0% for 6 months.

This increase only affects households on flexible tariffs, those on a fixed tariff will stay at the same cost. All will receive the VAT discount.

We advise those on flexible tariffs to find a fixed deal, as the prediction is there will be a further increase for the quarter after (January).

Paul from Derby has severe health conditions, making it hard for him to keep warm at home and he struggles to pay his energy bills.

Our Green Doctor Cath helped him to apply for a 50% discount on his water bill and a refund for a recent leak, saving him Β£322.

She also gave him a free air fryer and electric throw to save on electricity and keep him warm when the weather is chilly.

Paul says: β€œI’m very grateful to Cath, she has gone above and beyond to help me. It’s great that the Green Doctor service exists for people who need support.

"I’m saving money on bills, I can stay warmer at home, and I spend less on cooking. It’s priceless.”

This is a fully funded service open to people of any age and income, whether you own, rent, or are in social housing.

26/08/2026

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain has been issued for today and tomorrow (Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 August) in many areas of East Midlands – along with a warning of possible flooding.

The risk of localised flooding is higher because of months of hot, dry weather which has left the ground extremely dry.

This week’s wet weather may lead to difficult driving conditions, disruption to power and other utilities, and a possible risk to life from fast-flowing flood water.

To help prepare for the risk of flooding:

β€’ Know your flood risk and sign up for free flood alerts and warnings
β€’ Pack a β€˜grab bag’ of essential items, like medicines, bottled water and insurance documents, in case you need to stay put or leave your home in a hurry
β€’ Check in on relatives and neighbours, particularly those who may find it harder to cope
β€’ Check gutters, drains and downpipes, and clear leaves and debris
β€’ Have an emergency plan and keep it handy – include things like emergency phone numbers
β€’ Check out property flood resilience measures
β€’ Find local flood resilience activities, such as your local flood warden scheme
β€’ Never enter flood water, either on foot or in a vehicle. In an emergency, call 999
