Today we celebrate the strength, courage, and resilience of women everywhere — especially the incredible migrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking women who are part of our Heya Nottingham community.

Many of the women we work with arrived in the UK carrying stories of challenge, loss, and uncertainty. Yet every day they show extraordinary determination — learning new skills, supporting one another, rebuilding their lives, and contributing so much to our communities. Their strength reminds us that women are powerful agents of change.

At Heya Nottingham, we have witnessed women who refused to give up. Women who turned isolation into connection, barriers into opportunities, and fear into solidarity. Through our safe spaces, ESOL sessions, community gatherings, and wellbeing activities, we have seen friendships grow, confidence return, and voices become stronger.

This International Women’s Day, we also want to express our deepest gratitude to all the women, volunteers, partners, and supporters who have stood beside us over the years. Your dedication has helped us reach hundreds of women across Nottingham, ensuring that no one feels alone and that every voice matters.

Together, we continue to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and build a future where every woman — regardless of where she comes from — can feel safe, valued, and empowered.

‏شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِّنَ الْهُدَىٰ وَالْفُرْقَانِ ۚ فَمَن شَهِدَ مِنكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ ۖ وَمَن كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ ۗ
(Qur’an 2:185)
“The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Qur’an was revealed as guidance for mankind, with clear proofs of guidance and the criterion. So whoever among you witnesses the month, let them fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days to be fasted later” — Qur’an

Ramadan is a sacred month of mercy, reflection, and renewal—when hearts turn back to Allah and souls are nourished by the light of the Qur’an. It is a time to fast not only from food and drink, but from what burdens the heart; a time to grow in patience, compassion, and gratitude. As we welcome this blessed month, may our days be filled with sincerity, our nights with prayer, and our lives with kindness toward all.

O Allah, allow us to reach Ramadan and help us to fast it and stand in prayer with faith and seeking Your reward. Accept from us our fasting, our prayers, our charity, and our recitation of the Qur’an. Purify our hearts, forgive our sins, and grant us closeness to You. Make this Ramadan a turning point toward goodness and guidance for us and our loved ones. Ameen.

رمضان شهر الرحمة والمغفرة والقرآن، شهر تتطهّر فيه القلوب وتسمو الأرواح، وتُفتح فيه أبواب الخير. هو فرصة للتقرّب إلى الله بالصيام والقيام وتلاوة القرآن، وبذل المعروف، وإصلاح النفوس. في هذا الشهر المبارك نتعلّم الصبر، ونجدّد النية، ونسعى لأن نكون أقرب إلى الله وأكثر رحمةً بالناس.

اللهم بلّغنا رمضان، وأعنّا فيه على الصيام والقيام إيمانًا واحتسابًا. اللهم تقبّل منّا صيامنا وقيامنا وقراءتنا للقرآن، واغفر لنا ذنوبنا، وطهّر قلوبنا، واجعلنا من عتقائك من النار. اللهم اجعل هذا الشهر فاتحة خير وبركة علينا وعلى أهلينا وأحبابنا. آمين.

We are inviting people from across Nottingham to participate in a filmed community project that explores social issues and lived experiences.

Participants will take part in short, guided on-camera activities. There is no acting involved, and participants are not expected to prepare or rehearse responses.
We welcome participation from people of all ages, backgrounds, identities, and experiences. Come as you are. More details on eventbrite page.

The project is supported by My Nottingham , with Nottingham Contemporary as venue partner. Food and refreshments will be provided following the filming.

Last week we were delighted to be visited by DPCC Angela Kandola at the Shelia Roper Centre as part of Nottinghamshire Police’s Walk In My Shoes campaign — listening to lived experiences, breaking barriers, and ensuring all communities feel represented and included.

A big thanks to Shamsher and Nikkita from Communities Inc. for supporting the women to complete the survey.

Her visit also coincided with Know Your Numbers Week, raising awareness of the importance of checking blood pressure. A big thank you to our amazing volunteers for supporting the day.

Knowing your numbers is crucial — high blood pressure often has no symptoms but can lead to serious health issues if left unchecked. For Arab women in particular, this awareness is vital, helping to protect our health while also amplifying the voices of women who are too often unheard.

Together, we are working for a healthier, safer, and fairer Nottinghamshire. 💙

After THREE years, 59 of us finally made it happen 🎉🙌 – and with another long waiting list, it just shows how much these adventures are needed and loved ❤️✨ Can’t wait for the next one (hopefully sooner this time!) 🌟

Big shout-out to England for making it all possible 💚🎊
