Education for the Children Foundation

Education for the Children Foundation Education For The Children work with young people from all backgrounds in the Jocotenango area. GT.

Driven by a commitment to equal opportunities, Education for the Children has worked with disadvantaged young people and families from the Jocotenango area since 2003 to access quality education, nutritious food, healthcare and social support. We aim to empower young people with the skills and confidence to be successful in their chosen careers. EFTC runs The School of Hope in an urban area where

extreme poverty, gang crime, domestic violence and alcoholism are everyday realities. Food, healthcare, counselling and career guidance at the school remove obstacles to education and enable these students to realise their potential. Over 700 children and young adults study with EFTC both at The School of Hope and via a Scholarship programme for high-school and university students. Visit: https://linktr.ee/eftc

The School of Hope is the first step in our students’ educational journey. 💛 From the very beginning, we want to foster a love of learning through engaging materials, hands on activities, and the joy of discovering something new.

Miss Doris gave us a peek into her Prepa classroom and shared what it is like to be their teacher.

“They have grown in recognizing numbers and shapes, solving problems, and participating with greater confidence. They are also learning to listen to one another, help their classmates, and express their ideas.

They especially love hands on learning, counting and comparing with manipulatives, recognizing shapes, and practicing addition and subtraction with small numbers. But what brings them the most joy is doing it together, sharing ideas, helping one another, and discovering as a group how wonderful it is to learn something new every day.

What I love most is seeing their eyes light up when they discover something new.” ✨

These early experiences are building the confidence, curiosity, and love of learning that students will carry with them throughout their educational journey. 💛

Be part of their first steps. 💛 Become an Amigo and help us give them the opportunities they need to grow, learn, and discover all they can achieve.

In Guatemala, school attendance drops significantly as children get older: from 94% in primary school to 52% in lower secondary and just 31% in upper secondary.

At The School of Hope, our commitment doesn’t end at 9th grade. Through Future Pathways, we support students as they navigate high school, technical training, university, employment or entrepreneurship, helping them build a path toward financial independence.

One of the things we love most about The School of Hope is the genuine care our teachers have for their students.

💛 Creating a safe, supportive, and loving environment where every child feels encouraged to learn and grow is at the heart of our school.

We chatted with Miss Natalie about her experience teaching our Prepa students and what makes this stage so special:
“For them, learning is discovering the world, and for me, it is a privilege to accompany them on that journey of discovery.

My favorite part of being their teacher is watching them grow not only academically, but also in their independence, confidence, and ability to express themselves. Every small step forward reminds me that behind every lesson learned is a child giving their very best.

They teach me, too—patience, how to celebrate the little things, and how to view the world with a sense of wonder. Being their teacher is not just about teaching them; it is about leaving a small mark on their lives while they leave a huge mark on my heart.”

This is what makes The School of Hope so much more than a classroom.

Israel was one of the first students at The School of Hope, joining us in 2005.

After graduating, he went on to study Electronics and Microprocessors. But like many young people in Guatemala, Israel faced a difficult reality: his family’s financial needs meant continuing at university was no longer possible.

Our commitment does not end when a student leaves the classroom. We aim to walk alongside our students until they have a pathway to meaningful employment and financial independence.

In collaboration with Project Apoyo , Israel received the financial support he needed to open his own barbershop. ✂️

Today, Israel is a business owner and is able to support himself and his two children.

From one of our first students to an independent business owner and father, Israel’s story is what Future Pathways is all about helping students turn their education into a sustainable future.

Become an Amigo of a class and help provide the education, support, and opportunities students need to reach their goals.

Meet Mylin 💛
A former student of The School of Hope who is now a teacher, helping the next generation pursue their dreams.

Mylin grew up in a family where opportunities for women were limited. Her mother only completed sixth grade, but dreamed of a different future for her daughter. She enrolled Mylin at The School of Hope, where the generosity of a sponsor helped change the course of her life.

For Mylin, education became a way to break the cycle of poverty and open doors that once seemed impossible.

Today, she is living proof of what your generosity can do.

Conoce a Mylin 💛

For girls in Guatemala, education can change the course of their future. 🇬🇹

📚 In Guatemala, only 51.6% of girls complete lower secondary education, compared with 84% across Latin America and the Caribbean.

👧 Guatemala’s adolescent fertility rate is 68 births per 1,000 girls ages 15–19, and in 2024, nearly 2,000 births were recorded among girls ages 10–14.

🌱 At The School of Hope, 20 Prepa girls are beginning their education journey and need sponsors to walk alongside them as they grow, learn, and beat the odds.

❤️ We receive no government funding. Supporting these girls is made possible 100% through the generosity of our donors.

Sponsor a class and be part of their journey from the very beginning.
