Is there a similar charity in the UK, maybe College based?
These students are learning how to fix cars. Along the way, they're discovering that sometimes fixing a car can help fix a whole lot more. ❤️
Students at Louisa County High School in Virginia are using their automotive classes to repair donated vehicles for local single mothers.
The school partners with the nonprofit Giving Words, which provides the finished cars to families completely free of charge.
The charity was founded in 2018 by Eddie and Ginny Brown after they realised that one problem repeatedly stood between single mothers and greater independence:
transportation.
Without reliable transport, getting to work, attending college, reaching medical appointments and simply looking after a family can become considerably harder.
What began with Eddie repairing cars in his own driveway has since grown across Virginia, with more than 60 vehicles donated to the organisation.
Now high-school students including Owen Yarrington and Stephen Smith are helping get those cars safely back on the road.
For the teenagers, these aren't simply classroom projects.
They know somebody will eventually be putting their children in the car they're repairing, so every bolt and every repair has to be done properly.
And they get to meet some of the people whose lives their work changes.
“When they tear up and cry,” Owen said, “it makes you want to tear up and cry.”
Their teacher, Shane Robertson, understands the significance particularly well.
He's a former student of the same automotive program who returned to teach the next generation.
As he puts it, “It's not just a car. It's not just nuts and bolts. It's literally the difference between someone making it and someone not.”
One recent recipient was Jessica Williams, a single mother of three who had been working as a grocery store cashier.
Having reliable transportation means Jessica can now consider going to college, finding a better job and spending more time with her children.
She said she'll never forget all the people who helped make it possible.
These teenagers went to class to learn how to get cars running. They ended up helping families move forward too. ❤️
