ENGLISH CIVIL WAR ANCESTORS

Researching Civil War soldiers can be a challenge as most surviving sources have not been indexed by name.

However, although State Papers Online (SPO) is available only to institutions, it can be accessed at any library or archive that holds a subscription. Note, though, that the catalogued names generally represent officers rather than the rank and file.

The National Archives at Kew (TNA) holds several record sets that mention names of men who fought in both the Civil War and during the Interregnum. The TNA guide to Medieval and Early-Modern Soldiers does warn that, “There is very little material on rank-and-file Royalist soldiers” and “no comprehensive lists of officers of the Parliamentary forces” or its ordinary soldiers.

These record sets are catalogued by date and sometimes date. You may find records of repayments made to villagers with whom soldiers had been billeted, petitions by distressed widows, regimental pay lists, warrants and musters.

You may not find a particular individual but these records open up a wider window into the life of communities who found themselves in the midst of warfare.

PARISH REGISTERS
To find online parish registers for a particular county, go to Genuki at https://www.genuki.org.uk/ or search ‘FamilySearch wiki’ with the county name to take you straight to the correct page; e.g. https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Hampshire,_England_Genealogy

A point to remember is that county boundaries have changed over time so some parish registers in a county collection may relate to a different county now. Bournemouth, for instance, used to be in Hampshire but is in Dorset now.

AN ANCESTOR’S GRAVE CAN REVEAL SO MUCH…

Visiting a graveyard and reading headstones can often provide a goldmine of information.

You may be looking for a specific burial site but stumble across more than one memorial dedicated to members of a particular family which will inevitably expand your family tree.

Memorial Inscriptions can be both informative and intriguing:
• You may read the names of family members you may not have come across in your research before.
• You may find reference to a death you have been trying to find for a long time because it occurred elsewhere or even abroad.
• Some inscriptions reveal extra information about an individual; e.g. occupation, involvement in a society or club, military service.

Be a family history tourist and build your trip round visiting graveyards!
