πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ Our new tandems are on the road! πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

Yesterday was a very exciting day for In-Tandem East Lothian as our new tandems took to the roads for the very first time! We had 13 riders on 6 tandems, plus 1 solo rider, with two routes to choose from. πŸŽ‰

🌿 Short Route – 20 miles
A lovely ride through Old Craighall, over the hill to Little France, through Craigmillar Castle Park and on to Bridgend Farmhouse CafΓ© for coffee. We then headed back to QMU via Fisherrow and the Musselburgh Lagoons.

🌳 Long Route – 28.9 miles
The longer group headed towards Whitecraig, climbing to Elphinstone before continuing through New Winton, West Saltoun and on to Glenkinchie Distillery and Visitor Centre for lunch. The return journey took us along the Pencaitland railway path before heading back to QMU.

Glenkinchie proved a popular stop for cyclists, with two other groups arriving after us! The cafΓ© has lovely views over the gardens, the staff were really welcoming, and the soup and sandwiches were delicious. Our trunk bags were already full of jackets and tools, though, so sadly there was no room for a bottle from the shop! πŸ˜‚

A fantastic first outing for our new fleet – here’s to many more miles, smiles and adventures! πŸ’™πŸ’›

πŸŽ‰πŸš΄β€β™€οΈTHEY’RE HERE! OUR NEW TANDEMS HAVE ARRIVED! πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸŽ‰

What a day! We were absolutely thrilled to take delivery on Monday of 6 brand-new tandems for our Expanding Participation Through Cycling project! πŸ₯³

These new tandems will replace some of our older bikes which have become less reliable and were in need of a LOT of TLC. We’re so excited to have a shiny new fleet that will help us grow the club and create more inclusive cycling opportunities across East Lothian. πŸ’™πŸ’›

Our Expanding Participation Through Cycling project has been made possible thanks to a People and Place grant. People and Place grants are funded by the Scottish Government and are administered and supported by SEStran.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this possible! We’re incredibly grateful for the support. πŸ™Œ

We can’t wait to get these beauties out on the road and start clocking up the miles! πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸ’¨πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ’™πŸ’› A visit from Volunteer Centre East Lothian πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ

Last week we were delighted to welcome Robert Scott, Community Development and Engagement Partner from VCEL, to find out more about In-Tandem East Lothian and what we do.

We’ve had fantastic support from VCEL since the early days of setting up the club, and we’re delighted that Robert is taking this forward. From becoming a charity and finding funding, to networking with other community organisations and helping us grow, their support has been invaluable. We’re so grateful to have them behind us as we continue to develop inclusive cycling opportunities across East Lothian. πŸ’™πŸ’›

And we did manage to persuade Robert to get on one of our lovely tandems! πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸ˜„ He’s yet to sign up for one of our group rides, though… we’ll keep working on him! πŸ˜‚

Last Thursday we enjoyed our fourth and final summer evening ride of the season – and at last, we were treated to some lovely summer weather! 🌞

We had 3 tandems with 6 riders, plus 1 solo rider, setting off from QMU and following the River Esk to Inveresk, Wallyford and Pinkie before stopping for a tasty ice cream at the lovely S.Luca Dairy Ice Cream shop. 🍦

We then continued on to Musselburgh Racecourse, Fisherrow, Brunstane and Newcraighall before returning to QMU – a lovely 13-mile cycle. πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

A special welcome to Lucy, who joined us for the ride and is hoping to become one of our new pilot riders soon. It was great to have you along, Lucy, and we hope to see you back on a tandem with us very soon! πŸ’™πŸ’›

πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ New tandems are on their way! πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸš΄β€β™€οΈ

Earlier this summer, four of us made the trip down to Gargrave in Yorkshire to visit our tandem supplier JD Tandems and try out a range of options for our fleet. After lots of testing, discussion and deliberation, we finally made our choice, all built by JD Tandems to our exact specifications:
⚑ 1 Orbit Lightning Bosch E-tandem πŸ₯°
πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ 5 Orbit Velocity Pro tandems 😍

We’re incredibly grateful to the team at JD Tandems for working with us to get the tandems exactly right for our riders, and for arranging delivery to East Lothian for us.

A huge thank you to the SEStran People & Place Grant Fund for funding these new tandems and helping us continue to expand and improve inclusive cycling opportunities. πŸ’™πŸ’›

We can’t wait to take delivery, get them out on the roads and start putting some miles on them! πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸŒΏ

πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ Our first August group ride on Sunday was a fantastic one β€” and our largest ride to date! πŸŽ‰

A brilliant 22 riders, riding 9 tandems and 4 solo bikes, set off together from Queen Margaret University in Musselburgh. We’re so chuffed to see our membership growing and to welcome more riders into the club. πŸ’™

The group followed the River Esk before heading through the beautiful East Lothian countryside to the Pencaitland Railway Cycleway and on towards Pencaitland, where the riders split into two groups for the short and long routes.

β˜• Short route – 18 miles
The short route enjoyed a well-earned refreshment stop at Rosarista Coffee House before heading back to QMU, completing a very enjoyable 18-mile ride.

⛰️ Long route – 35 miles
After leaving the Cycleway at Pencaitland Maltings, the long route continued on the road through Pencaitland before climbing up towards East Saltoun and on to Humbie Hub for a much-needed cafΓ© stop. That climb up to the cafΓ© certainly earned the coffee! πŸ˜…β˜•

The return journey took the riders through West Saltoun, Pencaitland, New Winton, Cousland and Whitecraig, to complete a challenging 35-mile route.

The feedback from the riders was fantastic β€” great routes, lovely-to-ride tandems, and plenty of fun, friendship and laughter along the way. ❀️

A huge well done to everyone who took part, and a warm welcome to our growing membership. Here’s to many more miles together! πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸš΄β€β™€οΈ

πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸŒ… Summer Evening Ride πŸŒ…πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

We had a lovely time on our evening ride on Thursday 16th July, with glorious sunshine making for perfect cycling conditions.

We had 5 riders taking part, with 2 tandems setting off from Queen Margaret University and 1 solo rider joining us en route.

The route took us through Musselburgh to Craigmillar Castle Park, where we enjoyed fantastic views of the historic castle. We then continued through Brunstane and on to Joppa for a well-earned ice cream and coffee stop, making the most of the warm evening and wonderful views across Joppa, Portobello and the Firth of Forth.

Our return journey took us through Newcraighall before heading back to QMU, completing around 10 miles. We're already looking forward to our next evening ride in August.

πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸŒΏ Club Ride Round-Up πŸŒΏπŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

Our In-Tandem East Lothian club ride on 12th July made the most of the glorious summer weather.

We had 10 riders, with 5 tandems and 1 solo bike, setting off together from Queen Margaret University in Musselburgh. The group followed the River Esk before heading through the beautiful East Lothian countryside to the Pencaitland Cycleway and on to Ormiston.

At Ormiston, the riders split into two groups. The short route enjoyed a well-earned refreshment stop at Hood's Scottish Honey CafΓ© before returning via Cousland, Carberry Tower and Inveresk Village, completing a 17-mile ride.

The long route continued through Pencaitland before taking the quiet back roads via Samuelston to Haddington, where everyone enjoyed lunch at Rocksalt CafΓ©. The return journey followed the Longniddry Railway Path and the coastal route through Port Seton and Prestonpans, completing a 32-mile ride.

Both groups were treated to some of East Lothian's stunning scenery, making the most of the beautiful sunshine and enjoying their al fresco coffee and lunch stops along the way.
