Craigmillar Now

Craigmillar Now Craigmillar Now is an arts and heritage centre and home to the Craigmillar archives But Craigmillar Now is far from a static museum.

Welcome to Craigmillar Now, a community-led arts and heritage organisation rooted in the heart of Craigmillar. Based in a beautifully-restored 19th-century former church beside Fort Kinnaird Retail Park (58 Newcraighall Road, Edinburgh), we’ve transformed the space into a vibrant cultural centre for the Greater Craigmillar community. At our core is a public archive, the home of the Craigmillar Arc

hives, preserving decades of local history, photographs, and stories, including the legacy of the former Craigmillar Festival Society. We run a year-round programme of creative and community-focused activities: exhibitions, workshops, artist residencies, events, and volunteer opportunities , open to all ages and backgrounds. Whether you want to explore the area’s heritage, try your hand at photography or visual arts, get involved as a volunteer, or simply join in events and community gatherings, Craigmillar Now is for you. We believe in building something locally owned, inclusive and meaningful, a place where the community’s past and present come together to inspire creativity, connection, and pride in Craigmillar.

We are delighted to share that two exhibitions of works from the Craigmillar Now collection will be featuring in the programme this summer...

Sandra George: Start from the Level
27 June- 27 September at City Art Centre, 2 Market St, Edinburgh EH1 1DE

We’re partnering with the City Art Centre on the largest presentation of work by Sandra George to date, featuring over 200 photographs of her empowering archive. Showcasing Sandra’s work with communities, documenting and developing vital social-action projects in Edinburgh for over thirty years, from the late 1970s onwards.

We’re also looking forward to a programme of events at the City Art Centre celebrating Sandra’s photography including sharing events with family, friends and colleagues, and new responses to her archive of work.

Lee McCormack: A Magic Lantern
6—20 August at Craigmillar Now

We'll also be showing 'Lee McCormack: A Magic Lantern' at Craigmillar Now. This powerful and sensitive photography exhibition from Niddrie photographer and former community worker Lee McCormack is the first solo presentation of her work.
Lee’s personal, joyful images capture pioneering art and community projects across Scotland between the late 1970s to the early 2000s. McCormack trained with the Film Workshop Trust and went on to work for Craigmillar Festival Society, Magic Lantern Van, Womenzone and Women’s Aid, engaging with diverse groups across Scotland.

Huge congratulations to Niamh Britton, who’s painting “My Sea of Love” has been shortlisted for The Scottish Portrait Awards and will be on display at the National Galleries Scotland: Portrait later this year.

Niamh exhibited this captivating portrait of Edviges and Emilio in her solo show ‘Reflections of Craigmillar’ at Craigmillar Now last year, and we’re so proud that its next destination will be one of Scotland’s National Galleries ✨✨

"My Sea of Love" has been shortlisted for The Scottish Portrait Awards and will be on display at the National Galleries Scotland: Portrait later this year.

I'm absolutely delighted to be celebrating this incredible couple, Edviges and Emilio Tavares Lima. Their work at Livity empowers and inspires young people in our community 🥰
