We are Grassroots Clothing, a fledgling community initiative set up by Joanna Foottit and Archie Lowe. The organisation provided support for individuals to access work. It was during that time we identified a lack of suitable interview and work clothing as a real issue for many men on benefits or low income. Knowing the positive impact that securing sustainable work has on confidence, self-esteem
and mental well-being, and with so many of us discarding good quality clothing, we realised the service could bridge that gap. So alongside our busy day jobs, our small grass roots project emerged! Our aim is simple. We want everyone to have the same chance when applying for jobs. Preparing for an interview is an important step on the journey into work but it's also one that can be quite daunting. Many of the people we work with are vulnerable males facing multiple barriers to work, who may have experienced homelessness, are unemployed or underemployed on zero hour contracts or low income. To help our clients feel good and face interviews with confidence we provide quality, smart interview clothing and practical interview training. We are the only service in Edinburgh providing interview clothing and support to men. We work in partnership with Smartworks, an established charity helping women. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of both individuals and corporate organisations who have donated an extensive stock of quality suits and clothing. Recently we received 3000 ex-branch garments from RBS. We are currently working towards Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation status. This process will take around six months. Until registration is complete we are unable to apply for any funding. We are reliant on our own fundraising activities and donations. What started as a very small idea operating out of an office store cupboard, has evolved into a much needed service. We are determined to keep our project going, but we need help to do so. Anything you may be able to donate would be wholeheartedly appreciated. Your support can really help us to keep working in the communities that need us, by continuing to help men into employment and changing lives in Scotland.
