Volunteering for Wellbeing

Volunteering for Wellbeing Volunteering for Wellbeing is a Bridges Centre project recruiting, training and supporting volunteers to help in their local communities in Monmouthshire.

Volunteering for Wellbeing is a Bridges Centre project recruiting, training and supporting volunteers to provide support to others in the community throughout Monmouthshire. The project involves setting up groups and activities, bringing people together to help to improve wellbeing, enable friendships and support networks to develop, and help people to feel more involved with their community. Help

ing others and doing something meaningful, can really help people feel good about themselves and can also be a great way of building confidence to access further training and employment. We all need different things to feel well and happy. Some people may be able to ‘give’ support and some may need to ‘receive’ support, but we can all benefit from being with others and doing activities we enjoy. Opportunities for volunteering may be in all sorts of settings, for example:-
• Helping with refreshments and activities in social groups for people who are feeling isolated
• Visiting people to provide company to people who can’t get out
• Driving someone to an appointment
• Assisting on a gardening project that involves people affected by mental health problems
• Sharing a skill or knowledge with others e.g. playing an instrument, sewing, painting or reading

Some quotes from volunteers:-

‘It gets you involved with the community and doing something positive.’ Richard

‘It’s nice to feel you are wanted, that’s good for your mental health.’ Geraldine

‘You feel good because you are making someone else’s day better.’ Amber

Monmouthshire County Citizens Advice Bureau (MonCA) are delighted to announce the opening of a new Outreach service launched in conjunction with Magor with Undy Town Council.

The drop-in Outreach service will be based in the Magor and Undy Community Hub (the Hub) on the 2nd Tuesday of each month
from 10am to Midday, with the first date being 8th September.

Could you spare a few hours each week to make a real difference?
You could be on the till, chatting with customers and helping on the shop floor, or upstairs in our sorting room, sorting all our wonderful donations and getting them ready to sell!
Theres always plenty of tea, coffee, biscuits, laughter and you could make a huge difference to a local charity.

Fancy knowing a bit more with no pressure to sign up? Contact us on here or email [email protected]

It time to reveal another of this years "Hidden Heroes" from Monmouthshire. This is Steve and he is a remarkable Volunteer driver who has driven over 4,000 miles, helping people get out and about in Monmouthshire when they would otherwise struggle. Steve also rides our trishaw bike and has been particularly appreciated in his role as a volunteer buddy for a young person with additional needs. On top of all this, he also volunteers for multiple other local organisations!

Steve is wonderful at making people feel safe, valued and appreciated and we couldn't think of anyone better to receive a Hidden Hero award of a free weekend away from our partners, Room to Reward .

Steve is seen here, receiving his award from Vanessa Badderley-Potter, Mayor of Chepstow.

🌟 Volunteer Story of the Week 🌟
By Gemma from our Abergavenny Volunteering for Wellbeing Team💛

Role: Christmas dinner cook for Santas Little Helpers

Cooking beef and roast potatoes for the community for Christmas dinner; for Santas Little Helpers in Llanfoist

The highlight of cooking for the community was delivering our cooked ingredients to Llanfoist Hall with my daughter on Christmas Eve, where everyone came together to plate up what they had cooked. The atmosphere was joyful, and there was a great sense of gratitude for the support we were able to offer.

Later, we received photos of people receiving their food and enjoying their dinners, which made the experience even more special. It was rewarding to know that we could contribute to supporting individuals who were alone at Christmas or unable to afford a festive meal of their own. Looking forward to helping out again next year!

Time to introduce another "Hidden Hero"! This is Richard who volunteers in Abergavenny, both riding our trishaw bike to enable elderly or disabled people to get out and feel the wind in their hair and also as a driver for our Community Car Scheme. Richard has covered over 4,000 miles helping people get out and about and was a perfect candidate for celebrating with a Room to Reward gift of a weekend away to thank him for his tireless voluntary work.

Richard is seen receiving his prize with Briony Nicholson, Mayor of Abergavenny.

Our next "Hidden Hero" this year is Terry. Terry is a volunteer befriender, visiting multiple people each week to brighten their day and ensure they have something to look forward to. We are often short of male befrienders and Terry is so kind in visiting so many people each week that we wanted to reward him for his kindness! He can now enjoy a free weekend away thanks to the Room to Reward charity who we have partnered with to celebrate our fabulous volunteers across the county.

Terry is seen here, receiving his award from Kay Peacock, Mayor of Usk.

Another of our volunteer "Hidden Heroes" recognised this year was Spiro from Abergavenny. Spiro rides our trishaw bike, enabling elderly or disabled people to get out and about, having fun and seeing the sights and sounds of Abergavenny! He is also a volunteer driver for our car scheme, covering hundreds of miles, getting people to important appointments and places. With a constant smile on his face and the ability to brighten everyone's day, we were delighted to thank him for everything he does!

Spiro is seen with Abergavenny Mayor Briony Nicholson who awarded him his Room to Reward gift of a free weekend away.

Could you help us? 🚗

Every journey provided by the Bridges Community Car Scheme is made possible by our amazing volunteer drivers. Thanks to them, local people can get to medical appointments, social groups, to the shops and other essential journeys.

Right now, there are more people who need our help than we have volunteer drivers to support. This means we can't welcome any more passengers to the scheme until our team of volunteer drivers grows.

Could you be the person who helps us change that?

To become a volunteer driver, all you need is:
💛 Your own vehicle
💛 A little spare time - even just 1 hour a week can make a real difference.

We'll provide, a DBS check, full training, fuel expenses, the opportunity to meet wonderful passengers, make a real difference, and enjoy our volunteer social events.

Every new volunteer driver means we can help more local people stay independent and connected to their community.

If you've been thinking about volunteering, now is the perfect time. We'd love to welcome you to the team!
