Bridges Befriending Scheme

Bridges Befriending Scheme Bridges Befriending is a wellbeing project that links local volunteer befrienders with people who require a little company.

Our befrienders visit an older person in their home, perhaps for a cup of tea and a chat, or to go out for a walk. Community Connections supports people who are socially isolated in Monmouthshire to feel part of their community by providing volunteer befrienders. We bring people together either on a one-to-one basis or in social activity groups. Volunteers can provide company at home and may also

enable people to get out to get to appointments or local facilities. Community Connections has two project bases, one in Bridges Community Centre, Monmouth, and the other in The Palmer Centre, Chepstow. The project has a steering group made up of representatives from Monmouthshire County Council (MCC), Aneurin Bevan Health Board (ABHB), Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations (GAVO), Monmouthshire Housing Association, Care and Repair, Bridges Community Centre and the Palmer Centre.

We really need a few extra volunteers in our Bridges Community Shop - Monmouth.
Could you spare a few hours each week to make a real difference?
You could be on the till, chatting with customers and helping on the shop floor, or upstairs in our sorting room, sorting all our wonderful donations and getting them ready to sell!
Theres always plenty of tea, coffee, biscuits, laughter and you could make a huge difference to a local charity.

Fancy knowing a bit more with no pressure to sign up? Contact us on here or email [email protected]

Going the extra mile – one trolley at a time 🛒

Staff commitment takes many forms.

Earlier this summer, Laura demonstrated hers by taking a shopping trolley for a dignified spin around Monmouth, gathering essentials ahead of our Afro-Welsh Connection fundraising gig.

Was it glamorous? No. Was there even the faintest trace of shame? Also no.

It is often the unseen bits – the last-minute dashes, heavy lifting and willingness to look faintly ridiculous in public – that make community events happen.

The evening went on to raise more than £1,200 for Bridges. Thank you, Laura, and all our staff and volunteers who regularly go above and beyond. 💚

It time to reveal another of this years "Hidden Heroes" from Monmouthshire. This is Steve and he is a remarkable Volunteer driver who has driven over 4,000 miles, helping people get out and about in Monmouthshire when they would otherwise struggle. Steve also rides our trishaw bike and has been particularly appreciated in his role as a volunteer buddy for a young person with additional needs. On top of all this, he also volunteers for multiple other local organisations!

Steve is wonderful at making people feel safe, valued and appreciated and we couldn't think of anyone better to receive a Hidden Hero award of a free weekend away from our partners, Room to Reward .

Steve is seen here, receiving his award from Vanessa Badderley-Potter, Mayor of Chepstow.
