Grange Project We're a family documenting our journey creating a Wilder Wales starting with our very own 80 acres!💚

The land is showing off this week. Oxeye daisies, birdsfoot trefoil, blackberry thick in the hedges, all brought on by the heat.
And we've got an unexpected gap in the cabin diary this weekend.

Off-grid, a few degrees cooler than wherever you are right now, and gloriously short on phone signal.

Last minute. This weekend. Link in bio.

Pete Cairns, in our view, is rewilding royalty.

30 years in the conversation, co-founded Scotland: The Big Picture, now hosting his own podcast At the Edge.

We covered wildcats, lynx, beaver bombing, the illegal lynx release in the Cairngorms in January, and what's actually behind a 25-year debate that still hasn't landed a lynx in Scotland.

Pete's key message: the "just pay the farmer" line is the most dangerous narrative in the rewilding movement. Bringing animals back was never the hard bit. The hard bit is everything we feel about it.

Drama on the project. One of our pigs being significantly smaller than pigman Paul's pigs. Managed to squeeze themselves through a badger track in the fencing. Which unfortunately resulted in an injury to poor patches poor Patch's leg. Rest assured with taking advice. We've isolated her and giving her lots of care and opportunities to rest and recover.

Last year, much of what we grew in the Grange Project market garden started life somewhere else, arriving with us as ‘baby’ plug plants. This year, we’re doing something different.
It’s often easiest to buy plug plants online. It’s convenient - but that convenience can come at a cost (literally and figuratively!)

Growing from seed (when you know how) offers some very practical advantages:

Lower cost - a single packet of seed can produce dozens, sometimes hundreds, of plants compared with buying individual plugs.
Greater choice - many of the most flavourful, resilient or unusual varieties are only available as seed.
Stronger plants - seedlings raised in your own conditions adapt from the start to your soil, weather and care.
Timing control - you decide when to sow, rather than working around what’s available to buy.

Perhaps most importantly, growing from seed changes your relationship with growing itself. Instead of starting halfway through the process, you become part of the whole cycle; observing how plants respond to light, temperature and local conditions in real time.

Because this is something many people want to do but aren’t quite sure how to begin, this spring we’re running a hands-on Growing From & Saving Seed course at the Grange Project with experienced grower Peni Ediker.

The day focuses on practical skills you can immediately apply at home: building confidence with sowing, germination and seed saving in a supportive, small-group setting.

If you’d like to feel more confident starting plants from seed, you can find full details here:

Spring is nearly here.

Hands in the soil. Birdsong at dawn. Learning skills that really matter.

We’re excited to launch our new Events programme at the Grange Project - bringing together a season of courses focused on growing food in harmony with nature and deepening our understanding of the natural world.

This year’s programme ranges from half-day workshops to a three-weekend series, with free camping and home-cooked lunches prepared straight from the garden. These are hands-on learning experiences rooted in practical skills, shared knowledge, and community.

- Growing from & Saving Seed - with Peni Ediker
- Learning Birdsong & the Dawn Chorus Weekend - with Tim Birch (donation-based)
- FARMStart - how to earn from growing food, with Rachel Hammond
- Soil Health, Agroforestry Systems & Mushroom Growing
The Joy of Scything - with Nicole Clough

Whether you’re an enthusiastic beginner, a smallholder, or dreaming of making a living from the land, there’s something here for you.

Every booking also helps fund Wilder Connections, supporting young people to build lasting relationships with nature.

Come and learn within a living rewilding landscape.

Episode 50: The Future of Rewilding in Cymru (Wales) - Tir Natur

In this milestone episode of the Wilder Podcast, we explore one of the most ambitious nature recovery projects currently emerging in the UK.

Chloe and Tom speak with Gwenan Jenkins-Jones and Eben Muse from Tir Natur, the Welsh rewilding charity behind a newly secured 1,195-acre site in the Cambrian Mountains. Together, they discuss the realities of restoring nature in Wales, the cultural and social dimensions of rewilding, and why community involvement is essential for long-term ecological recovery.

From degraded peatlands and river systems to questions of rural identity and the future of Welsh landscapes, this episode looks at rewilding through a uniquely Welsh lens.

If you are interested in rewilding, landscape-scale restoration or the future of rural communities, this is an episode not to miss.

Episode 49 is live: Regenerative Agriculture – Changing How We Grow Food.

We sit down with Clare from Planton Farm to talk honestly about regenerative farming, soil health, livestock, food systems and why restoring land has to go hand-in-hand with supporting farmers and communities. It’s a hopeful, grounded conversation about working with nature rather than against it.
