Connecting to Our Cameroonian Roots 🌱

“They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”If our parents and grandparents were farmers, then they have passed on an inheritance worth rediscovering.

Last Saturday, we took the first step on that journey planting sweetcorn and Follon together as a community.
This is more than just growing food; it is about reconnecting with our roots, our traditions, and the knowledge passed down through generations.

From soil to harvest, we will follow this journey together—learning, sharing, and celebrating the values of resilience, unity, and cultural heritage that define us.

This year, Ensemble Manchester engaged young people under the age of 24 and adults over 60 in intergenerational activities focused on exploring Cameroonian cultural identity and collecting oral history interviews. These interviews will be used to develop resources to support the school curriculum, produce digital cultural content, and build archives to preserve the cultural heritage of the Cameroonian diaspora in Greater Manchester.

What was delivered
• regular workshops focused on art, cooking and vegetable growing
• music and sustainable fashion activities
• educational sessions in French linked to Cameroonian cultures
• partnerships with supplementary schools and local cultural organisations
• practical sessions at Manchester Art Gallery
• active involvement of parents and young people
• production of cultural and educational content shared online

These activities strengthened youth participation, learning continuity and connections between generations.

Plans for next year
• consolidation of existing programmes
• expansion of artistic and cultural activities
• development of structured educational tools
• improved communication and visibility
• launch of new digital resources
• stronger community partnerships

Cameroon and England share a connected history shaped by people, education and culture. These links live on through families, languages and traditions passed from one generation to the next.

Within our community, this shared heritage supports identity and belonging. It helps young people understand where they come from and how these connections continue to shape their lives today.

Ndop fabric holds an important place in Cameroonian culture. The patterns shape a clear identity and reflect a history passed on across generations.

Within Connecting to our Cameroonian Roots, young people study these patterns and reinterpret them. They learn to draw clean lines, organise shapes and respect the structure of the original fabric. They build a practice that links tradition and personal expression.

You notice different approaches in their work. Some follow the classic geometry. Others introduce shapes connected to their daily life in Manchester. Each piece shows a conscious link to ndop and shows their commitment.

This progress strengthens cultural continuity. Young people gain method, discipline and a lasting connection to their roots.

Connecting to our Cameroonian Roots propose un atelier consacré à l’art et à la mode durable. Les jeunes travaillent sur des motifs inspirés du Cameroun et de leurs expériences à Manchester. Ils apprennent les bases du dessin textile, la couture simple et la transformation de vêtements. Ils développent une relation directe avec leurs racines culturelles et avec leur environnement.

Les séances donnent accès à des savoirs pratiques
• choix des tissus
• compréhension des motifs traditionnels
• techniques de réemploi
• assemblage propre et soigné
• finitions adaptées à un vêtement du quotidien

Tu vois la progression dans leurs projets. Tu vois comment chaque étape les aide à renforcer leur confiance. Les créations produites seront intégrées au programme du projet et servira de support pour les prochaines activités artistiques.

🧵✨ L’apprentissage de la couture africaine : un héritage qui se tisse point par point

La couture africaine n’est pas seulement un savoir-faire… c’est une mémoire vivante, une manière de raconter notre histoire à travers les motifs, les couleurs et les matières.

Apprendre à coudre un kaba, un ndop, ou un vêtement inspiré des traditions africaines, c’est apprendre :
🌍 à honorer nos racines,
🎨 à exprimer notre créativité,
🤝 à garder vivants les liens entre générations.

Dans nos ateliers, les jeunes découvrent non seulement des techniques de couture, mais aussi la symbolique des tissus africains, le langage des couleurs, et l’importance culturelle de ce que nous portons.

Parce que chaque fil raconte une histoire.
Parce que chaque création est un acte de transmission.
Parce que la mode africaine est une fierté à célébrer et à partager.

As part of the Connecting to our Cameroonian Roots project, we have built strong partnerships with 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 and 𝗕𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 to train young people who will become the 𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄.

Today, we are at the Manchester Art Gallery for a practical training session, where our young participants are learning how to transmit Cameroonian culture, art and heritage through creative activities. 🌍✨

🌍✨ 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘀

Fabric has always carried meaning - it connects us to 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆, 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲.
From 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗱𝗼𝗽 cloths that link the living to the spiritual world 🌿, to 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻𝘀 that bridge heaven and earth 🐉, every pattern tells a story about what we value.

This week, our young participants explored the art of designing their own strip of fabric, expressing their personal connections to nature, heritage, and spirituality. 🎨👕
They drew inspiration from 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀, 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗶, 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆, and 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 - blending tradition and modern creativity into a shared cultural tapestry.

🍲 And because every story deserves a flavour, 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 also played its part - reminding us that gastronomy is a true 𝘃𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴.

This Saturday, we’ll begin exploring how these individual creations could come alive - 𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲, forming part of the final film. 🎥
