Breakthrough UK is a proud DPO partner on WISHES - the world’s largest trial of job crafting!

Rooted in the Social Model of Disability, this research focuses on how changing workplaces - not people - can create more meaningful, manageable and sustainable work for everyone.

Funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and led by the University of Strathclyde, it’s great to be working alongside such a collaborative and inclusive group of partners.

On this week's team highlight, meet James - our Business and Partnerships Lead ⭐

Since joining in 2023, James has supported the growth of Equal Edge - our trading arm providing workplace support workers for disabled employees, alongside wider work with employers.

He works closely with organisations to build partnerships and support more inclusive, accessible workplaces. 🤝

Meet the Team⭐
We’re starting off our series of team highlights with our first feature- Elaine!

Elaine joined Breakthrough in 2003 as part of an employment advocacy project supporting disabled people and employers to remove barriers to work.

She moved into policy and engagement in 2010, working closely with former CEOs Lorraine Gradwell and Michele Scattergood, and has since led on community projects around health equity and inclusive employment.

She's an experienced disability inclusion trainer and community researcher, and manages most members of our team.

We’re Breakthrough UK.

We work alongside disabled people to remove barriers and create more inclusive opportunities- whether that’s through employment support, advocacy, or working with organisations to do better.

Our work includes projects like Manchester Disability Collaborative, Foundations for Change, Equal Edge, DPEG, and DDRG- each focused on creating change in different spaces, from workplaces to communities.

Disability isn’t something within a person- it’s created by the barriers in society 🌍

The social model of disability helps us shift perspective: instead of asking what’s “wrong” with an individual, we ask what’s getting in the way. That might be physical access, inflexible systems, communication barriers, or attitudes that exclude rather than include 💡

When we remove those barriers, people can participate fully and equally- not because they’ve changed, but because the environment has 🤝
