Every Moment Matters 🌿✨

“Life is not measured by time, it is measured by moments.”
At Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary, this quote is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s a big moment like welcoming a new resident to their forever home, or a small, quiet moment like watching a bumblebee dry it's wings on a sunny afternoon—we value every single one.

We believe that all animals are sentient beings who deserve love, safety, and respect. For the unwanted or neglected animals who find their way to us, we promise a lifetime of peace and care. But our mission doesn't stop at our resident gates; we are also dedicated to protecting and nurturing the local wildlife that shares our beautiful space. From the birds and bees, to the wild bunnies and local swans everyone is welcome and safe here. 🐾🌾

None of this would be possible without the community support we receive and our incredible team of passionate volunteers who dedicate their time to making the sanctuary a true haven.
Let's cherish the small moments together.

DID YOU KNOW...?

Emus are the second-tallest living birds on Earth, reaching heights of 1.5 to 1.9 meters (4.9 to 6.2 feet) and weighing up to 55 kg. These robust, flightless ratites are specially adapted for endurance, sprinting, and enduring Australia's harsh, sunny climate.🌞

🦶🏼Emus have only three forward-facing toes on each foot with no backward-facing toes... This allows them to thrust forward to sprint to speeds up to 30mph!🦶🏼

🏃🏼Their powerful legs allow them to reach strides averaging 3 meters!🏃🏼

🦵🏼The strength of their leg muscles also generates a kick powerful enough to break fences or fend off predators🦵🏼

🪶Uniquely, each feather follicle produces two feathers. 🪶
New feathers are black but fade to a grayish-brown or cream hue under the intense Australian sun.🪶

👁️They are equipped with two sets of eyelids: one for regular blinking and another specialized set used to block out blowing dust.👁️

🪨Since they do not chew food, emus intentionally swallow small rocks and pebbles to grind up seeds, insects, and plant matter in their gizzard🪨

🥚Emu eggs are large, they have distinctive dark green shells and each egg weighs 1 to 1.5 lbs, has the volume of about 10–12 chicken eggs!🥚

You can see some of these beautiful features on our gorgeous birds in the images 👇🏼

We have a secret to share 🤫

What is a sanctuary?

**sanc·tu·ar·y** — A place of refuge, safety, and healing. 🌾✨

At Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary, we provide a forever home for unwanted, neglected, or forgotten animals. Here, emus can roam freely, alpacas can roll in the fresh grass or dust, chickens forage, goats play and every single creature is given the chance to live out their lives with the dignity and love they deserve. 🦙🐓🐑🐐🪶

But if you’ve ever spent time here, you know a beautiful secret...

It isn’t just a sanctuary for them. It’s a sanctuary for us too 🤍

In a fast-paced, noisy world, this space offers a different kind of refuge. It's a place where both animals and our volunteers can slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature.

When we comfort and care for them, they comfort us. In healing them, we find a little bit of healing for ourselves.
Whether you’re a volunteer, a visitor passing on the roadside to stay Hi or a supporter from afar, thank you for being a part of this safe haven.
Together, we are building a kinder world—one rescue at a time.

🤍 An update from Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary 🤍

If we’ve been a little quiet on here recently, it’s because our hearts are incredibly heavy. We are deeply saddened to share that we have recently said goodbye to our beloved alpaca, Sammy. 🌈

Sammy was easily spotted my his distinctive pink lips and gentle disposition. He loved a sweet treat (particularly a red apple or carrot) as an occasional indulgence.

At approximately 25 years old, Sammy passed away peacefully, due to old age, in a special place of his own choosing.

Sammy spent 8 wonderful years with us at the sanctuary. He was our wise old guardian—protecting the other animals, guiding our volunteers, and teaching Eddie how to lead in his absence. A true Sage, leader and gentle soul.

He chose his own peaceful spot to cross the rainbow bridge, leaving behind a legacy of love and protection. 🦙💫🦙✨

Sammy wasn’t just a resident; he was the heart of our MAS family being the oldest and original resident. To say he will be missed by our volunteers and his animal companions is an understatement. The sanctuary feels a little emptier without his gentle, protective presence.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding while we take some time to grieve and heal.

Rest in peace, sweet Sammy. You had a beautiful life, and you will never be forgotten. 🕊️❤️

Until we meet again sweet Sammy 🪽

✨ **BIG News from the Sanctuary!** ✨

We had some incredibly special and hard-working visitors at Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary today!

The local Malmesbury Beaver group marched on down to hang out with our resident rescues, and let’s just say they absolutely earned their Animal Friends Badges! 🏅🐾

From learning all about what our animals need to getting stuck into the daily chores, these mini animals advocates were an absolute force of nature (in all the right ways!)

Here’s a little peek into their busy day:

The Big Hello: Walking in an orderly line to meet the crew, greeted by the bleats of the goats who were ecstatic to see new faces. They arrived ready for action!

Poo Patrol: No job is too messy for a Beaver! They rolled up their sleeves and helped us scoop up animal droppings to keep the field clean.

Heavy Lifting: We even had some wheelbarrow races— we mean important farm transport duties across the field.

Goat Watching: Everyone knows our rambunctious goats can be menaces to the enclosures as they like to "adjust" the encloseres themselves, so the beavers made sure to test out the structural integrity of our fences while getting a closer look at our curious goats.

A massive thank you to the leaders and all the brilliant Beavers who brought so much energy and kindness to the sanctuary.

Our furry and feathered friends loved having you, and you're welcome back to help out anytime! 🐐🐓❤️

🐰 New Spring Arrivals: Meet the Bunny Brigade! 🌱
You all loves updates about the Malmesbury swans but there is some serious new competition in town for the title of "Cutest Sanctuary Babies"! 🦢❤️

We are absolutely thrilled to share that we have some tiny new visitors making themselves right at home at the Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary. Say hello to these FOUR WILD BABY BUNNIES who have been spotted exploring our field!

What’s Happening at the Sanctuary?

The Ultimate Playdate: These little kits have been busy test-driving their hopping skills all over the green grass.

Making Unlikely Friends: As you can see in the videos, they aren't even fazed by our resident giant, the emu! Talk about a mismatched friend group. 😂

Community Love: We know how much our wonderful community adores following our local swan family, so we just know you’re going to fall head over heels for these fluffy little field dwellers.

They are incredibly fast, very curious, and bringing so much extra spring joy to the sanctuary right now. Keep your eyes peeled next time you're near the grounds—you might just spot a tiny pair of ears popping up out of the grass! 🌾✨
