The cross-party Education Committee has today published its report on Reading for Pleasure, following evidence from a range of experts, including Libraries Connected CEO Isobel Hunter.

We're pleased to see many of our recommendations reflected in the report, including:

✅ Automatic library membership for every child
🤝 Dedicated outreach staff in every library service
📖 Stronger local partnerships to support reading and literacy

The Committee rightly recognises that public libraries are uniquely placed to inspire reading for pleasure. They provide children and young people with a free, welcoming space to explore books on their own terms, supported by library staff who know how to spark curiosity and confidence in reading.

The Committee has issued a clear call to action. We urge the incoming Burnham government to make reading for pleasure part of its mission to expand opportunity and improve life chances. With libraries at the heart of local partnerships, every child should have the chance to experience the lifelong benefits of reading.
