They didn’t simply write books — they changed how generations understood love, society, identity, ambition, and the human mind.

From the Restoration period to the modern age, these remarkable women left an enduring mark on British literature:

🖋️ Aphra Behn (1640–1689)
A pioneering English writer of the Restoration period, Behn was one of the first English women known to have made a living from writing. A playwright, poet, and novelist, she is particularly remembered for Oroonoko and her influential contribution to English literature.

🌹 Jane Austen (1775–1817)
With wit, irony, and unforgettable characters, Austen examined marriage, class, money, manners, and human relationships. Pride and Prejudice remains one of the most celebrated novels in English literature.

🖋️ Mary Shelley (1797–1851)
At just eighteen, Shelley conceived Frankenstein, a groundbreaking work that continues to influence literature and popular culture. Her novel raised enduring questions about science, responsibility, ambition, and humanity.

🌿 Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855)
Author of Jane Eyre, Brontë created one of literature’s most memorable heroines while exploring independence, morality, love, social class, and a woman’s desire for a life of her own.

🔥 Emily Brontë (1818–1848)
Her only novel, Wuthering Heights, became one of the most distinctive works of nineteenth-century English literature, known for its intense characters, dramatic setting, and unconventional narrative.

📖 George Eliot — Mary Ann Evans (1819–1880)
Eliot brought remarkable psychological depth to the English novel. Works such as Middlemarch explored society, relationships, morality, ambition, and the complicated choices people make.

🌊 Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)
A central figure of literary modernism, Woolf experimented with narrative form and explored consciousness, memory, identity, time, and women’s lives in works such as Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse.

🕵️‍♀️ Agatha Christie (1890–1976)
The creator of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became one of the most widely read writers in the world. Her detective fiction helped define the modern mystery novel.

💡 Their eras were different. Their voices were different. Their styles were different. But their influence has one thing in common: it endured.

British literature would be difficult to imagine without the extraordinary contributions of its women writers. 📚✨

We can’t think of anything better to be remembered for.

We're heartbroken to share the passing of country music legend, cultural icon, and champion of literacy Dolly Parton (), at the age of 80. Her father never learned to read, so in 1995 she founded the Imagination Library in his honor, mailing free books to children every month. He later told her it was probably the most important thing she'd ever done. Thank you, Dolly. We will always love you. 🦋

Entertainment retailer hmv has hired a new books team and rejoined The Booksellers Association (BA) with a view to “becoming a destination store for books on the high street” according to new books manager Thanhmai Bui-Van. 👇
