Luton Roma Trust

Luton Roma Trust Luton Roma Trust works to enhance the lives of the Roma community of Luton and to support and encourage their integration into the wider life of the town.

Our goal is to lift the eyes of the Roma to glimpse a future they may not even have dreamt of - a future beyond persecution, beyond mere survival, and towards a life in which the lowly are lifted up and given the place of honour in the wider community. But dreams without realisable goals remain just dreams. The offer of 'a pie in the sky when you die' is an insult to human dignity. Giving a man a

fish is of little use when what he really needs is a fishing rod. The long term focus of our work is therefore on empowering the next generation - many who were born in the UK - to embrace Education, understand it as an opportunity their parents were denied, and begin to see it as the gateway into a new life. Here they will retain the best of their Roma traditions, and at the same time want make a real contribution to the community which has blessed them. But noble goals remain just ideas if they are not resourced. Creating posts for a Roma Community Champion and an Roma Education Champion were huge steps forward for us. But now we need the resources to sustain the work in hand. If you feel inspired to play a part in this, with your prayers, your time and even your money, then do please drop us an email. We would love to hear from you - whoever you are, wherever you are! Have a look at our logo. It began its life 20 years ago in the shed of an English Romany in Kent. One day as he was repairing an old wagon, powerful beams of bright coloured lights broke through the shed window "pinning" him to the wagon, a spinning rainbow of light breaking into his heart. "What does this mean?" he asked. "Each ribbon of light stands for each of the tribes of the Gypsy people. Right at the heart a cross draws them together with all the people of earth into one single new humanity."

Last week, we took a group of young Roma to Anglia Ruskin University to help them gain a better understanding of university life, scholarship opportunities, and the support available should they choose to pursue higher education in the future.

This visit was part of our commitment to the GRT Higher Education Pledge, coordinated by Anglia Ruskin University. We are deeply grateful to Professor David Smith, Sophie, and Roxana for their invaluable support in making this experience possible.

The visit left the young Roma feeling inspired, encouraged, and empowered to dream bigger about their futures. One young person shared " It was an extraordinary experience and it helped understand better what I want to do with my future". D., 17 years old

We remain committed to supporting and empowering young Roma people, because we believe that an educated Roma community is a stronger and more powerful community.

Today, we proudly celebrate International Roma Day โ€” a day to honour our rich culture, history, and the contributions of Roma communities around the world.

At Luton Roma Trust, we stand in solidarity with Roma people everywhere, recognising both the resilience and strength of our communities, as well as the challenges many still face. This day is not only about celebration, but also about raising awareness, promoting inclusion, and continuing the fight against discrimination and inequality.

We are proud to support, empower, and uplift Roma voices in Luton and beyond. Together, we can build a future where every Roma individual is respected, valued, and given equal opportunities to thrive.

Happy International Roma Day! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’šโค๏ธ

2025 has been a great year in supporting community social integration, providing digital skills training and ESOL classes but also preschool education. We're also proud to have employed two young Roma girls from the new generation of our community. Furthermore, in 2025, we celebrated 10 years of Luton Roma Trust, 10 years of making a difference in the lives of so many Roma families, a great milestone in our work!

As we step into 2026, we are so excited for the opportunities ahead and eager to keep supporting our community strive. โœจ Thank you for being a vital part of our journey and for believing in our vision.

Today, on the International Human Rights Day, we are proud to celebrate the completion of our 9-week ESOL programme for the Roma community, delivered in partnership with NOAH Enterprise.

Language is more than communication - it is a gateway to rights, inclusion and dignity. By supporting Roma to build confidence in English, we are helping open doors to education, employment and every day life. This is what human rights look like in practice: ensuring everyone has the tools and opportunities to thrive.

A huge congratulations to all the participants for their motivation and hard work. Your progress and determination inspire us every day.

We hope to continue this important work in the new year, pending further funding so that even more members of the Roma community can benefit from accessible, empowering education.

Special thanks to NOAH for supporting this journey - and Happy International Human Rights Day!

Weโ€™re proud to announce the implementation of Phase 2 of our Early Years Education Project โ€“ a dedicated initiative to bridge the educational gap of Roma children and ensure every child gets the strong start they deserve.
Too often, Roma children in Luton do not attend nurseries. This is not because parents don't care but because many Roma parents are unfamiliar with how the UK nursery system works, and past negative experiences with education in their countries of origin, such as Romania, have led to understandable mistrust or uncertainty.

That is why our project is aimed at working closely with Roma parents and educators, to create an inclusive, nurturing, and culturally respectful early learning environment.

What we're doing:
โœ… Carrying out free workshops for Roma children led by an Early Education Specialist

โœ… Supporting early years language and literacy development

โœ… Creating a welcoming space where every child feels they belong to

Education is a right, not a privilege. Together, we can help Roma children thrive from the very beginning. ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐ŸŒˆ

As of today, we are excited to announce that we have started implementing a pilot ESOL (English for Students of Other Language) course in partnership with NOAH Enterprise. The course will last for nine weeks, and it is aimed at improving Roma communityโ€™s confidence in English language skills. Community members are looking forward to coming back next week.

Our Charity Manager said: This pilot course is essential to the lives of so many Roma in Luton. Knowing the language is crucial to any social integration modelโ€

There has been a great interest from additional community members in joining the course and we hope to be able to start another ESOL course soon.
