Roots to Employment, a new project from Penrose Roots, has been shortlisted for the Luton Rising Partnership Fund.

Roots is our community-based recovery service in Luton run by SIG Penrose. It supports adults from all walks of life to improve their wellbeing, build confidence and connect with their community, using nature as the setting. Anyone can join, with no referral criteria and no time limits.

The £2 million fund will create a small number of partnerships working towards the Luton 2040 vision: a healthy, fair and sustainable town where nobody has to live in poverty.

Working in partnership with The Culture Trust Luton, Roots to Employment would help Luton adults who have been out of work for a long time move into jobs. Roots would offer support with skills, work experience, placements with local employers and interview preparation.

The public vote is open from Friday, 2 October to Friday, 9 October. If you are 16 or over and live in an LU1 to LU4 postcode, you can choose the three projects you think will do the most good for Luton: www.cesvotes.com/LutonVote

Last Tuesday we held our harvest festival and Roots 2 Fibre showcase. With over 100 visitors learning about the amazing projects that we have in Penrose Root, with the growing of the harvest, the repairing and recycling of the bikes, the blender bike where you could make a smoothy by peddling 🚲. Also this year we had the added showcase of the Roots to Fibre, where we delivered over 65 sessions to over 100 people, teaching new skills, in sewing and embroidery, recycling clothes, printing and all manor of other skills. Followed by the most entertaining and enthusiastic cat work of some of the members showing off the garments and bags they had made. Seeing the beaming smiles of pride in the members that took part make this a very easy job. A huge thank you to all who visited that day but also everyday. To the team at Roots who continue to deliver a service second to none, but also to our founders and supporters who without you making people smile would not happen, Garfield Weston Foundation The National Lottery Bedfordshire Lieutenancy Javed Hussain Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation and many more. We thank you 🙏

We are grateful to , who have awarded Penrose Roots £40,000 over two years towards our running costs.

Core costs are rarely the most eye-catching thing to fund. They are also the thing that keeps the gates open, the staff in post and the sessions running. Every year, over 500 people come through Roots for therapeutic gardening, peer support and community recovery in Luton.

Thank you to the Garfield Weston Foundation and the Weston Family Trustees for backing the everyday work that makes the rest possible.
