Help name the new Luton apple, cast your vote online.

Luton has a new apple - help us find a name for it!

A previously unidentified apple variety has been discovered in a back garden on Clarendon Road, High Town.

Laboratory DNA testing confirmed it is a new cultivar. We're in the process of getting the apple officially registered as a new variety, but first, we need a name for it!

We’re proposing five names based on where the apple is from, what it looks like and its parents. Find out more and cast your vote at:

A different kind of watering hole: thanks to Mariana Brown at The Bricklayers Arms for supplying liquid refreshment to keep 3 nearby fruit trees alive. We carried the water down to our Albion Court garden to slake the thirst of the apple and pear trees there.

And Chef Tuoyo generously donated water to us for the roses at The Peace Garden, which the takeaway backs on to.

This was all part of our new season of Sunday Sessions, funded by The National Lottery Community Fund.

You can be part of it too - join us at 3:30pm next Sunday at The Peace Garden. Details on the website: ediblehightown.org

Out in our very dry gardens today. Watering survivor veg like beans and tomatoes - thanks to the kindness of neighbours who donate water to us.

Harvesting lavender- a true survivor plant in this drought.

Also found these plastic figures, perhaps free gifts? Do we really need these if they end up chucked away?

Picking cans and litter, too, 1 bag recycling, 1 bag rubbish- and removing batteries and 6 big vapes - with the fire risk they pose, taking them to the proper disposal point in town.

And all this in a couple of hours with the incredible help of volunteers. Join us, find out more at: https://www.ediblehightown.org/whats-on

How are your apples coming along? Will there be some surplus for the Luton Orchards and Edible High Town apple donation scheme?

It's been such a dry summer - a lot of fruit has dropped unripe, so we might have less fruit than last year.

Give us a heads up if you think you might donate!

Do you have an apple tree with more fruit that you can use? Donate them to us and we'll get them turned into delicious Luton Orchards apple juice. Drop-off starting from 17 August.

We’re pleased to announce that thanks to a generous grant from The National Lottery Community Fund, there’ll be more chances for you to join the Edible High Town community gardeners.

On top of our weekly Friday group, you can join:

- on selected Sundays in our 9 community gardens in High Town
- on various dates watering and weeding orchards in People's Park and Wigmore Valley Park

To see the dates and sign up as a volunteer, visit www.ediblehightown.org/whats-on

The funding also means we can work with St Matthew's Primary School to develop their vegetable beds and shade garden, and maybe add a colourful herb and flower border.

Keep an eye on our social media for updates and photos.

Beautiful ceramic tree labels made by 🇵🇸Lugus Ceramics🇵🇸 for Luton Orchards . They’re made from a special rough clay, patiently stamped with the names of the trees, fired twice for strength, a wash added so the letters are easier to read. Coming soon to Wigmore Valley Park Orchard and others.

Could you be a High Town watering angel?

Our community gardens are struggling in the heat. Could you pop by in the mornings or evenings and help water over the next weeks?

Especially our gardens on:

- Edward St/Kingston Rd
- Wenlock St/ Dudley St
- Albion Ct
- Burr Street Square

We’d be so grateful for your help. Our biggest challenge is access to water, since we lost access to a tap. Our rainwater harvester is almost empty now.

Bring water with you (thank you for your donation). We can lend you a watering can that suits you (small/big).

Just water or message us for a chat.
