Great youth work doesn’t just happen; it evolves. Here are five ways to innovate and stay relevant in your sessions:

Spot the need: Innovation starts with identifying the real problems young people face, not simply making changes for the sake of it.

Solve creatively: Look at long-standing youth work challenges from fresh, curious and non-judgmental perspectives.

Co-design with teens: Include young people in the creative process instead of guessing what they want.

Take smart risks: Create an environment where trying new ideas and occasionally failing are accepted as part of the learning process.

Iterate and adapt: Keep refining your activities as teenage culture, habits and needs evolve.

Only three young people turned up.

It can be easy to feel discouraged when the room isn’t as full as you hoped. But youth work has never been only about numbers.

A small table can still be a place where someone feels noticed. Where a friendship begins. Where a young person starts to feel that they belong.

So, if you showed up for three young people this week, the work still mattered.
