🎃 What a fantastic few days celebrating Derry Halloween at Verbal Arts Centre! 🧡

We had an amazing time welcoming so many families through our doors for Sherlock Bones & The Mayor’s Missing Chain as part of this year’s Derry Halloween celebrations! 👻

It was brilliant to see so many children, parents, grandparents and carers getting involved, having fun and enjoying the Halloween atmosphere together.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the event such a success. We loved seeing all the smiles, excitement and enthusiasm throughout the week! 🎉

We were delighted to play our part in celebrating 40 years of Derry Halloween, bringing families together for some Halloween fun in the heart of the city. 🎃

Phase 1 of GLOW is complete.

Over ten weeks, participants developed six fictional stories, all drawn from real experience of rural life.

Each story now comes with a discussion guide, shaped by Verbal after the completion of Phase 1. The guides now turn these stories into a starting point: to discuss the themes and shared experiences the participants have with the characters.

The interconnected nature of these stories tie back to GLOW's purpose, wellbeing of rural communities.

These stories and guides will now carry into the next stage, GLOW Phase 2.

Every GLOW story started as an idea someone said out loud.

A memory, a person, a place worth writing about. Participants brought the ideas, experiences, and these became the fictional stories created.

Verbal's literary team helped the participants shape the writing: voice, character and story structure.

Then the psychology team made sure the harder themes were handled with care and sensitivity that they deserve. So, the group can later discuss the finished stories and gain the most from the programme.

The six stories created in GLOW explore the themes of loneliness, belonging, emotional barriers and transportation barriers.

Participants could comfortably explore these sensitive topics creatively through fictional stories, whilst being able to protect their anonymity.

The interconnected nature of the six stories reflected how participants themselves viewed community, not as isolated individuals but as lives continually intersecting through shared spaces and relationships.

The stories in GLOW came from the people who had lived them.

A group of writers from the Greysteel lunch club worked with facilitator Cat Brogan to bring their own experience of rural life, the richness of their community and the everyday details into six stories which were created during GLOW.

Verbal's literary editors and psychology team worked alongside to shape and edit the writing. Fiction rooted in real life, from people who know rural life first hand.

GLOW is a rural arts and emotional wellbeing programme for older people in Causeway Coast and Glens. Phase 1 brought twelve participants from our previous programme SHINE.

Our group wrote fictional stories, drawn from real experience of rural life. Setting out to write about loneliness, emotional barriers, belonging and difficulty with transportation barriers.

First in a series looking back at GLOW Phase 1.
