🌍 Culture of Peace: Arts, Heritage and Storytelling Bring People Together

Poets, writers, filmmakers and cultural leaders gathered at Universal Peace Federation UK in London to commemorate the International Day of Peace 2026.

Hosted by Dr Sangita Swechcha, the Chair of International Association of Art and Culture for Peace (IAACP UK), the evening explored how poetry, cultural heritage, documentary film, storytelling and personal experience can help overcome barriers and build greater understanding between people.

From Nepal's ancient Kumari tradition to poetry beyond borders, community arts, resilience and the role of media, the programme demonstrated the many ways creativity can contribute to a culture of peace.

Nnamdi Chukwuka MBBS, former Minister of Culture of SOAD, spoke of the role and significance of the African diaspora.

Investing in peace also means investing in people, creativity, cultural understanding, dialogue and relationships.

🌟 Finding Your Voice, Strengthening Your Leadership 🌟
Our latest UPF Youth Leadership & Peacebuilding Programme brought young people together for an inspiring afternoon of public speaking, mindfulness, leadership and personal development.

Participants explored how to:
🎤 Speak with greater confidence and clarity
🧘 Develop inner calm and self-awareness
💬 Use their voice to influence and inspire
🤝 Listen respectfully to different perspectives
🌍 Share their vision for positive change

The programme featured practical public-speaking guidance from David Rennie, a guided mindfulness session with Caroline Heward, and an inspiring contribution from Dr Susan Jumoke Fajana-Thomas OBE, DCL on using one’s voice as a leadership tool.

A highlight of the afternoon was hearing the young participants share their own stories, ambitions and visions for change — from public health and women’s empowerment to youth leadership, community participation and peacebuilding.

The message throughout the programme was clear: every young person has a voice, and that voice can become a powerful tool for leadership, service and peace.

When Sacred Calendars Speak Together

A Reflection on the Closing Days of June 2026 and the Spiritual Foundations of Peace

As June 2026 draws to a close, the calendars of several religious and spiritual traditions converge around themes of fasting, remembrance, purification, prayer, gratitude, and responsibility. These observances do not diminish the distinct identities of the world's faiths. Rather, they reveal common moral concerns through which human beings are invited to cultivate self-discipline, deepen compassion, honor what others hold sacred, and strengthen the habits upon which peaceful societies depend.

Literary Voices of Change: Poetry, Prose and Narrative Perspectives

On Thursday, 18 June, Universal Peace Federation – UK's International Association of Art and Culture for Peace welcomed poets, authors and literature lovers for an inspiring evening of literary reflection, cultural dialogue and creative expression.

The event, organised by Dr Sangita Swechcha, featured the launch of two distinctive poetry collections: 'Pokhtak' by Dr Rupak Shrestha and 'Going to Darjeeling with My Father' by Nabin K. Chettri. Through readings and reflections, the authors explored love, family, memory, identity and the experience of living between cultures.

Uday Shankar Durjay and Shahd Karaeen shared further literary insights, while a panel moderated by Dr Sangita Swechcha examined how lived experience, pain and personal stories can give voice to the unheard and contribute to positive social change.
Ian Pelham Turner, international television broadcaster and UPF–UK Patron, reflected on the role of media and the responsibility carried by words in shaping understanding.

The evening reminded us that literature can cross boundaries, preserve cultural memory and help people encounter one another with greater empathy. We are deeply grateful to all our speakers, contributors and guests who made this such a thoughtful and enriching occasion.
