An emergency alert is designed to keep us safe. But for some survivors of domestic abuse, the recent wildfire alert highlighted a serious safeguarding concern.

For survivors who rely on a hidden or second phone to safely contact support, an unexpected loud alert could reveal a device they have carefully kept secret from an abusive partner.

This is a reminder that public safety systems must also consider the safety of those experiencing abuse.

Survivors should not have to choose between staying connected to vital support and protecting their safety at home.

Safeguarding needs to be built into emergency planning before the alert is sent, not afterwards.

For many survivors we support at Nour, safety is something they have had to fight to rebuild.

News of early releases for offenders convicted of crimes against women and girls can bring back feelings of fear, uncertainty and anxiety especially for those who have already experienced a system that did not always make them feel protected.

Survivors deserve more than being informed after decisions are made. They deserve to feel safe, heard and supported.

As the Victims Commissioner and Domestic Abuse Commissioner have warned:
“Victims should never have to choose between their safety and systemic failures.”

The World Cup has ended. But domestic abuse hasn’t.
During major sporting tournaments, conversations around domestic abuse become more visible. Statistics are shared, awareness is raised, and many people recognise the increased risks that survivors can face.

But when the tournament ends and the headlines fade, domestic abuse doesn’t disappear.
For thousands of survivors, this is not something experienced only during a World Cup. It is a reality that continues every day of the year.

The UK Football Policing Unit reported that during the FIFA World Cup 2026, 384 domestic abuse incidents were linked to the tournament, representing 17% of the 2,322 incidents reported.

These figures remind us why awareness matters but our commitment to supporting survivors cannot end when the football does.

Domestic abuse is not seasonal. It doesn’t stop with the final whistle. Every survivor deserves to be heard, believed and supported 365 days a year.

Domestic abuse incidents rise by 38% after England lose a World Cup match, with a further 11% increase the following day.

Incidents also increase by 26% even when England win. This is not anecdotal; it is evidence-based research (Kirby, Francis & O’Flaherty, 2013).

Major tournaments do not cause abuse. But for those already living with abuse, high-emotion match nights can increase risk, and the danger may continue after the final whistle.

Growing older should never mean living in fear.

Domestic abuse can affect people at every stage of life, yet abuse experienced by older adults often remains hidden.

Many older survivors face barriers to seeking help, including shame, fear, dependence on the person causing harm, isolation, or the belief that they won’t be believed.

Raising awareness is an important step towards breaking the silence, challenging stereotypes, and ensuring older people know they are not alone.

This Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to recognise and amplify the voices of male survivors of abuse.

Too often, men and boys face additional barriers to seeking support due to stigma, shame, fear of not being believed, or societal expectations around masculinity. As a result, many suffer in silence with the lasting impacts of trauma on their mental health and wellbeing.

At Nour, our services are not just for women. We also support male survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence, childhood abuse, and other forms of harm. We believe that every survivor deserves to be heard, believed, and supported, regardless of gender.

By challenging stigma and creating spaces where men feel safe to speak about their experiences, we can help ensure that no survivor feels alone.

Proposed new legislation could help survivors of domestic abuse remain safely in their homes by allowing perpetrators to be removed from social housing.

The proposed changes would give courts and landlords greater powers to evict perpetrators from social housing and, in some cases, transfer a joint tenancy into the survivor’s sole name.

For many survivors, leaving abuse should not mean losing their home, community, or support network. Safe and secure housing is a vital part of recovery.
