5 things we’re tired of hearing about q***r refugees—and why they’re bu****it.
1. “Why do q***r refugees need special treatment?” It’s not about special treatment, but about protection against additional discrimination and violence. Equality means taking different risks seriously.
2. “They faced discrimination in their home country, but now they’re safe here in Germany.” Anti-q***r hostility doesn’t stop at the border. Many q***r refugees experience exclusion and threats in shelters, at government agencies, and in everyday life. Anti-q***r hostility is a daily reality in Germany, too.
3. “Sexual orientation or gender identity play no role in the asylum process.” In many countries, people are persecuted because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This can be a primary reason for fleeing and is relevant under asylum law.
4. “Why do q***r refugees keep making their sexuality or identity an issue?” Because discrimination and erasure remain a reality. No one should have to hide in order to be accepted.
5. “Discrimination in shelters is just an isolated incident.” Numerous reports from affected individuals and specialist organizations show that anti-q***r hostility and assaults are a structural problem, not merely isolated exceptions—both within shelters and beyond.
