Trees for Streets

Trees for Streets We are the national street tree sponsorship scheme! How it works
Anyone can sponsor a tree in their street or neighbourhood with our easy-to-use online app.

Trees for Streets is the National Street Tree Sponsorship Scheme brought to you by the charity Trees for Cities. We’re a Tech for Good project that uses technology to empower people and make it easy for residents and organisations to get involved in greening their communities. We do this by hosting tree sponsorship schemes on behalf of local councils, and delivering local promotion and engagement

activity to bring these schemes to life. Our work raises funds through public sponsorship to supplement council tree planting budgets, enabling them to plant many more trees in their area. Simply choose your location by dropping a pin on the map where you'd like to have the tree planted, then answer a few quick questions, and make your donation. We'll then confirm with you if your chosen spot is suitable, after checking with the council's tree experts. If it's a good place for a tree, the council will plant a tree in Autumn or Winter - we'll let you know when. Then you can help the tree to establish and grow by watering it every week for 3 summers, and enjoy the many benefits it will bring to your street. This project is funded by DEFRA’s Green Recovery Challenge Fund. The fund is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England and the Environment Agency.

Even when it rains, trees need a helping hand this summer 💧

Young trees need at least 50L of water per week in order to become strong, well-established trees in the future, which they are unlikely to get from summertime showers in the UK.

Remember to water local street trees today to give them the best chance at a healthy future 🌳

🤔What are those bags around the base of a tree? They’re tree watering bags! And whilst it may look like the water goes in the big hole at the top - it actually goes in a small, discreet slit at the top. 🫣
The bags are double lined and can hold large quantities of water. 💧 They then slowly release it, ensuring water gets soaked into the soil gradually.
💡Here our sponsors demonstrate how to fill them - they can be a bit pesky but persevere because they’ve proven to increase establishment rates of new trees, so are well worth the effort 🩵🌳

Neighbours Jenny and Karen sponsored this lovely tree in Bristol, where it’s already providing much needed shade. It was 30C that day - record breaking heat for May.
So let’s plant more trees! 🌳

💧🌳 It’s and it’s never mattered more.
The UK has just seen record-breaking May heat with temperatures soaring above 35°C. In weather like this, young street trees are under real stress and they rely on us to help them survive.
Giving your local newly planted tree a good drink on hot days can make all the difference 🌿

Jo lives on a busy street in Sheffield that didn't have any street trees, and is often very loud from the continuous traffic into the city.
🌸 Her new cherry tree will bring many benefits - but one of them is as a natural noise barrier!
🔇 As it grows, its dense canopy will reduce the urban sound pollution that reaches Jo's home, and will look fabulous while doing it.
