Today, we're announcing a leadership change at Shrimp Welfare Project.

After helping build Shrimp Welfare Project from the beginning, our co-founder Aaron Boddy is transitioning from his day-to-day role as Chief Strategy Officer to become a Board Member, and will continue supporting our long-term direction and continuity.

We’re also excited to share that Chief Programmes Officer Krzysztof Wojtas is stepping into the role of CEO, providing clear leadership as we continue to grow.

🌊 Since founding Shrimp Welfare Project in 2021, Aaron has played a central role in shaping the organization’s strategy, building key relationships and helping set up the systems that will carry us forward. We’re deeply grateful for Aaron’s leadership, and for his continued involvement through the board.

Aaron is joining Ambitious Impact to lead a new initiative of their incubation program, focused on developing high-potential animal welfare projects.

“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built at Shrimp Welfare Project, and grateful to everyone who’s made this work possible,” says Aaron. “I’m excited to continue supporting Shrimp Welfare Project as a board member, while launching a new endeavor to accelerate animal welfare progress.”

Krzysztof added: “Aaron’s leadership has been foundational to Shrimp Welfare Project’s growth, and I’m thankful that Aaron will remain closely involved as a board member. I’m honored to step into the CEO role and keep building on the momentum we’ve created together with an outstanding team and partners.”

🦐 We’re energized for what’s next, and grateful to our collaborators and supporters for being part of this work.

We had an excellent time at Seafood Expo Global Barcelona last week, meeting with producers, suppliers, and retailers committed to continuous innovation and improvement in shrimp farming.

Our team had thoughtful conversations with companies who want to lead on welfare and are looking for workable pathways — reinforcing how much momentum there is for partnership-led progress across the shrimp value chain. 🌊

🦐 Shrimp Welfare Project is excited to keep building collaborative projects that help the shrimp farming industry transition to humane slaughter.

We’re excited to welcome 6 new team members who are expanding the reach and impact of our work. 🦐🎉

Program Development Lead Ida Radovanovic is working with Wild-Caught Scoping Leads, Antonia Chan and Jan Gaida, to explore potential welfare interventions for the trillions of shrimps who are caught in the wild each year. China Scoping Lead Fiona Wong is researching ways we can make an impact in China, the world’s top shrimp-producing and shrimp-consuming country.

We’re also growing our Humane Slaughter Initiative by strengthening our on-the-ground presence with new Technical Field Coordinators for Asia and Latin America. Thu Nguyen, based in Vietnam, and Prisila Castro, based in Ecuador, will be working directly with producers in the adoption and implementation of higher welfare practices on farms.

🦐 More retailer momentum: Asda has become the 12th major supermarket chain to publish a shrimp welfare policy!

Retailers across the UK and Europe are sending a strong signal that better practices are achievable, and expectations are continuing to evolve.

🌊 As shrimp supply chains transition to higher-welfare, Shrimp Welfare Project is here to support the industry by providing free equipment and technical guidance to producers, suppliers, and retailers.

We’re excited to see this progress and enthusiastic about helping corporate partners move towards sustainable and humane aquaculture practices.

Major milestone: Our smallholder farmer engagement programme, Sustainable Shrimp Farming in India - SSFI, is now spinning off as its own independent entity in India. 🦐

When we launched SSFI, the goal was to test and scale practical, farm-level improvements for shrimp welfare in India. Over the past 4 years, the initiative has been incredibly successful - and now, SSFI is taking the next step as an organisation. Rooted in India's context, this transition is about growth, local ownership, and stronger impact.

📰 The Fish Site shares the “pond bottom-up” approach SSFI has been using with smallholders in Andhra Pradesh to improve shrimp welfare alongside livelihoods.

Sustainable Shrimp Farming in India is helping smallholders in Andhra Pradesh improve shrimp welfare – and their own livelihoods – through a variety of simple, yet effective, interventions.

Shrimp Welfare Project is !

We are currently seeking two Technical Field Coordinators who will play a central role in our Humane Slaughter Initiative by successfully bringing electrical stunners into day-to-day farm operations in Asia and Latin America, respectively.

These are practical, field-based positions focused on coordinating manufacturing, shipping and installations; supporting logistics; and acting as a bridge between shrimp producers, equipment manufacturers, and the Shrimp Welfare Project team.

Apply ASAP: Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the roles have been filled.

🦐 Shrimp Fact of the Month 🦐

The Pistol Shrimp may be only a few centimeters long, but it makes one of the loudest sounds of any animal on Earth!

💥 With a highly specialized claw, this shrimp fires a jet of water so fast (over 60 mph) that it forms a bubble which collapses almost instantly, releasing a sharp shockwave.

That intense collapse is loud enough to rival a battleship blast, reaching sound pressure levels over 200 decibels underwater. It generates extreme heat (thousands of degrees, for microseconds) and can produce a tiny flash of light, making for one of the coolest physics tricks in the animal world. ✨

Fun fact: coastal waters can be so noisy with pistol shrimp snaps that they interfere with military sonar!

🌊 Given their extraordinarily powerful snaps relative to their size, scientists often consider pistol shrimps among the most formidable tiny creatures in the ocean.

Industry progress happens when data and implementation go hand in hand.

Our 2025 Corporate Impact Metrics reflect where the shrimp sector is heading and the innovations made through collaboration with producers, suppliers, retailers, and researchers.

This year, Shrimp Welfare Project:
🦐 Installed 7 new stunners, turning corporate commitments into practical welfare improvements on farms
🦐 Supported producers in the Humane Slaughter Initiative by providing equipment and technical training across 15 field visits
🦐 Worked on the ground with more than 40 farmers to gather data and refine shrimp welfare protocols
🦐 Celebrated 6 new retailer commitments in the UK and Europe, as consumers increasingly expect shrimp welfare policies from their supermarkets

This snapshot shows how those efforts are making waves across global supply chains.

🌊 Together with our industry and research partners, we are building a growing evidence base to inform the future of shrimp welfare by understanding what works, what’s scalable, and what delivers meaningful outcomes for shrimps and consumers.
