This year's Black History Month theme is "Honouring Our Communities" and we're honouring the Black LGBTQ+ people who made home for others when the world wouldn't.

From STAR House in 1970s New York to Black q***r organising in 1980s London, Black LGBTQ+ people have always been at the heart of the fight for safe, affirming homes.

That work continues. Black LGBTQ+ people still face both racism and anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination when it comes to finding and keeping a safe home. We're committed to listening, learning and making sure our services work for everyone in our community.

Last year, over half of the people we supported were Black or from other ethnic minority groups, which is why we offer interpreting and work to make our services culturally competent.

As part of our Colourful Connections programme, residents from our supported accommodation joined Community Kitchen Brighton for a practical batch cooking workshop. With step-by-step guidance from the facilitator and a warm welcome from the Community Kitchen volunteers, residents learnt how to prep meals in advance, stretch their food budget, cut down on waste and turn one base into several dishes. Then we all sat down to eat what we'd made!

A huge thank you to Sussex Community Foundation for funding this workshop and helping us create opportunities like this for a group of residents living in our supported accommodation.

We’re also looking for more brilliant people and organisations to help us offer practical, creative and wellbeing workshops for the LGBTQ+ people we support. We’d love to hear from expert facilitators who could run a session, or funders and partners who could help make more workshops possible, particularly in Brighton and London.

There are inclusive housing organisations out there STILL doing the work.

This year, 37 organisations achieved or maintained Pledge Pioneer status and Royal Borough of Greenwich became the only provider to achieve Pledge Plus status — the highest tier of the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge.

Delivered by Stonewall Housing on behalf of HouseProud, the Pledge assesses social housing providers on their work to create safe, welcoming and inclusive housing for LGBTQ+ communities.Last Friday, we came together at the Pan Pacific Hotel to celebrate this year's achievers and thank the sponsors helping embed LGBTQ+ inclusion across the sector.

It shows just how easy it is to be inclusive and show support to the LGBTQ+ community!
