It's still , and we have another valued volunteer to celebrate! As a local advice charity, we tend to talk more about our advice team volunteers, but we do have other roles here at Citizens Advice Barnet. Our Research and Campaigns team play an equally vital role, supporting us to spread awareness of trends we're seeing and influence change locally.

Colin has been volunteering in the team for a year and a half and played a key role in our recently successful campaign to reduce Barnet Council's use of bailiffs for Council tax enforcement. A freelance journalist, Colin also helps us through press engagement: you may have seen a few of his articles in the Barnet Post recently.

Here he shares his thoughts on volunteering in the team.

We are currently recruiting Research and Campaigns volunteers. If you'd like to join the team and volunteer alongside Colin, apply today:

This we have a special that showcases the amazing difference our volunteer advisers make every day.

Talia came to one of our drop-in advice sessions and spoke with volunteer Elizabeth. Having recently retired, she was struggling to pay her Council Tax, and she was being pursued by the bailiffs for Council Tax debt. Elizabeth booked her an appointment with another volunteer, Mel, who contacted the bailiff company on Talia's behalf and booked her another appointment with volunteer Ma'isha to help her apply for Council Tax Support. Unable to get through to the bailiff company, Ma'isha also contacted the council regarding her debt.

When Talia's next bill came through, it showed that she was now receiving Council Tax Support and her account was in credit. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, not only is Talia now free of debt, she's also receiving the financial support she's entitled to.

This we're celebrating our amazing volunteers. Last financial year, 89 people generously gave their time to help people in our community, volunteering over 3,000 days in total. Thank you so much!

This we're celebrating our incredible volunteers, like Sofia. Sofia has been volunteering with us in our advice team for over a year, and brings such warmth and passion to the role. Here she shares her thoughts on volunteering at Citizens Advice Barnet. Thank you so much, Sofia!

This week's comes from our Macmillan Welfare Benefits Team.

Over nine months, caseworker, Bettina, has been helping Saul, a man in his 70s who lived alone and had no friends or family to support him. Over that time, she supported him to claim Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit (through a Mandatory Reconsideration) and Council Tax Support, and organised a return of a Council Tax overpayment. Saul also had a NEST pension he didn't know how to access, and Bettina successfully arranged for the payment of this pension.

In total with Bettina's help, Saul's income has increased by £190.81 a week (£9,922.12 a year) and he has received additional one-off payments totalling £2,726.21.

This week's win showcases the power of partnership:

Tony came to Chipping Barnet Foodbank and spoke with their Advocacy and Campaign Lead, Bob, as he was being pursued by bailiffs for Council Tax debt. Bob contacted the council on Tony's behalf and they replied; however, Tony was unsure of his next steps. He spoke with our adviser, Juliana, who is based at the foodbank.

During her assessment of his situation, she identified that Tony may be eligible for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), due to his multiple ongoing health conditions. She explained both his next steps to address his Council Tax debt and how to apply for PIP and increase his income.

Thanks to both Bob and Juliana's efforts, Tony's debt has been almost halved and he is no longer being pursued by bailiffs.
