The Zimbabwe Educational Trust (ZET) was established in 1987 with the aim to improve vital access to education for children in Zimbabwe, particularly orphaned and other vulnerable children. Education offers the best opportunity for children to improve their standard of living and move out of poverty. ZET is a Leeds based charity which sends computers, books and other equipment to an educational centre in Zimbabwe and supports the Trinity Project Trust at a grass-roots level in Zimbabwe. The Trinity Project Trust aims to create an empowered community, free from property grabbing, HIV/AIDS, which respects the right of women and children. Established in 2008, their mission has been to provide free education and support on inheritance and child rights, the implementation of preventative HIV/AIDS programmes and the provision of education, training and support programmes for orphans and other vulnerable youths. ZET’s vision is zero tolerance to the violation of the child’s basic right to education and to unequal educational opportunities within Zimbabwe. The work ZET does supports the UNESCO Education For All goal and several of the Millennium Development Goals, in particular:

Today, we want to take a moment to remember and celebrate the life of Sholine, a much-loved and long-standing member of the Rafiki Girls Centre family.

Sholine’s journey with Rafiki was a special one. She was a graduate of one of the Centre’s earliest intakes and went on to become a pillar of the project for many years, supporting and encouraging other young women as they followed the path she once had.

Her journey from student to valued member of the Rafiki team was a true success story and a wonderful reflection of what the programme seeks to achieve: creating opportunities for young women to grow, thrive and, in turn, lift up others.

Sholine leaves a lasting legacy at Rafiki and in the lives of the many young women she supported over the years.

Our thoughts remain with her family and the entire Rafiki community.

She will be deeply missed and warmly remembered. 💚

Good governance might happen behind the scenes, but it is fundamental to everything we do.

At Zimbabwe Educational Trust, we take our responsibility to our supporters, partners and the communities we serve seriously.

Our Board of Trustees provides strategic oversight and meets quarterly to review our work, finances, risks and priorities, helping ensure ZET remains accountable and focused on delivering meaningful impact.

Alongside this, we carry out regular audits and due diligence on our partners and projects in Zimbabwe.

Because making a difference isn’t only about what we achieve. It’s also about how we achieve it.

Zimbabwe Educational Trust has been working alongside communities in Zimbabwe for nearly 40 years, supporting locally led solutions to some of the barriers that keep children and young people out of education and trapped in poverty.

We work with trusted Zimbabwean partners who understand their communities and know what is needed.

That approach has helped thousands of people access birth documentation, supported young women to gain skills and livelihoods and helped schools grow food to feed their pupils.

We work hard to make every donation count. In both 2023 and 2024, 88p of every £1 we spent went towards project delivery.

💚 Three years. Three schools. One idea: equip communities with the knowledge to grow more resiliently.

From 2023 to 2026, ZET and Foundations for Farming worked with three primary schools and their surrounding communities in Makonde District to tackle food insecurity and malnutrition through Climate Smart Agriculture.

The independent end-of-project evaluation found:
🌱 88% of pupil prize winners interviewed shared CSA knowledge with family and friends.
🥕 Around 75% of Community Open Day attendees established nutrition gardens following demonstrations.
🍲 More than 1,300 learners were reached through school feeding programmes.
🌾 More than 80% of beneficiaries in the evaluation sample were applying CSA principles on household plots.

And the impact goes beyond numbers. Schools have become places where children, teachers and communities can see sustainable farming in action and take that knowledge home.

That’s how learning grows. 🌱

In Makonde District, consecutive drought seasons have put already vulnerable farming communities under even greater pressure.

Through our partnership with Foundations for Farming, schools, children, women’s groups and community members have been learning Climate Smart Agriculture techniques designed to make better use of available resources.

The latest evaluation found strong knowledge retention across the practices assessed, with beneficiaries applying techniques including mulching, composting, manure application and planting stations.

More than 80% of beneficiaries in the evaluation sample were applying Climate Smart Agriculture principles in their household plots.

Climate change is making farming harder. Practical knowledge can help communities become more resilient. 🌱

🌾 Sometimes seeing really is believing.

As part of ZET and Foundations for Farming - Zimbabwe’s Climate Smart Agriculture programme, schools opened their gardens to surrounding communities through Community Open Days.

These became practical “look and learn” opportunities, where people could see crops growing and learn about techniques such as mulching, conserving soil moisture and reducing waste.

The result?

Approximately three quarters of attendees established nutrition gardens after the demonstrations.

Those gardens are now helping households access vegetables throughout the year, diversify their diets and, in some cases, earn income by selling produce.

This is the ripple effect we want to see: knowledge demonstrated at school, adopted at home and shared throughout communities. 🌱

Through our partnership with Foundations for Farming - Zimbabwe , Zimbabwe Educational Trust is helping schools in Makonde District tackle hunger while building practical, sustainable farming skills.

Across three primary schools, school gardens supported feeding programmes reaching more than 1,300 learners, surpassing the project target of 1,200. Produce grown in the gardens has helped provide nutritious meals, with Kanyaga and Kemukaka continuing their feeding programmes even after previous government support stopped.

For vulnerable children, this support is particularly important during periods of food insecurity, helping improve health, concentration and school attendance.
In 2025, Kanyaga Primary was recognised as the best school implementing the supplementary school feeding programme in Makonde District. 🏆

🌽 From 450kg to 3,400kg of maize.

When Mr Nyandoro first began practising Climate Smart Agriculture, not everyone was convinced.

After receiving training from Foundations for Farming - Zimbabwe in 2023, he persevered through an extremely difficult drought-affected season.

In 2024–25, he harvested 450kg of maize. A year later, after expanding to four Pfumvudza plots and applying what he had learned, his harvest reached an incredible 3,400kg.

He sold part of the harvest and bought a motorbike, giving his family transport to Chinhoyi. Today, his three sons have learned the techniques too, his household has food reserves to last until the next harvest and neighbours are beginning to adopt the practices themselves.

One farmer’s determination is creating a ripple effect. 🌱

🌱 Can a school garden change farming practices beyond the school gates?

Our latest project evaluation suggests it can.

For three years, ZET and Foundations for Farming have been working with primary schools and surrounding communities in Makonde District to promote Climate Smart Agriculture.

The results show that 88% of pupil prize winners interviewed had shared what they learned about Climate Smart Agriculture with their families and communities.
Children learn practical farming techniques at school and take that knowledge home, helping new approaches spread through their communities.

It’s why schools can be so much more than places of learning. They can become hubs for lasting community change. 🌍🌾
