Anyone living in Leeds fancy earning a £20 voucher for giving us your views on exercise and activity? We are doing this research in partnership with Leeds Older People's Forum and Active Leeds for Health , to inform what an advertising campaign should look and sound like in order to encourage more people to do exercise, particularly strength and balance training.

There are 7 focus groups taking place across Leeds in June, and we are particularly looking for people aged 45-65.

If you’d interested, drop us a line, the sessions are only an hour or so, are fun and informative, and you get a £20 voucher for your ‘troubles’!

Just a quick update to say we have (hopefully temporarily) reduced our class offerings! We plan to start new projects soon and restart the other classes as soon as we can. You can still join us every Tuesday for our excellent dance and Pilates classes. We already have a great group that joins weekly, and we would love to expand our community! See you there 💚

Lovely afternoon at armley leisure centre today.

A combination of Your Back yard, Sporting Memories and Leeds Older People's Forum put on a sporting extravaganza, a combination of sporting chat, including quiz, football, botcha and skittles, for older adults from across Leeds.

Malcolm, a super volunteer from led on the sporting chat, Your Back Yard delivered the walking footie, and LOPF provided the training to make sure the event was fully accessible to anyone living with dementia.

And big thanks to to Damien from Burmantofts Community Friends friends who brought his guys along from their sporting memories group.

Thanks to funding from sported it was free to everyone, and because of that, and the fact everyone seemed to have such a great time, similar free events are in the pipeline..watch this space!

In case you ere wondering how you might have gone in the quiz..a couple of questions

-On which golf course would you find the Road Hole?
-What was the first year that Phil 'The Power' Taylor won the world darts championship
-How many world snooker titles did Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins win
-And how did Leeds United lose the european cup final in 1975 to Bayern Munich (according to 4 of our participants who were actually there!)

No phones, answer via a comment and a prize to the winner..

WHAT GENERATIONAL DIVIDE?!

We hear a lot about tensions between generations, about the kids who are glued to social media and the older adults who never leave their armchairs, and never the twain do meet.

So, on Wednesday, to challenge those tropes ‘Your Back Yard’ teamed up with Leeds Older People's Forum to put on a festival of sport, of intergenerational walking sports, at the YMCA sports fields.

Taking part were St Bartholomew's C of E Primary School - Leeds (9- and 10-year-olds), West Leeds SILC (12-16 year olds ) and St Marys Menston 6th formers (16-17 year olds)

They each played walking cricket, walking football and walking netball against well established older adult walking sports teams; U3A Leeds cricketers, Bramley Walking Wanderers and the Headingley netwalkers.

The event was superbly supported by a team of volunteers, all Age Friendly Ambassadors from Leeds Older Peoples Forum, a group of people who volunteer to help make Leeds the very best Age Friendly City!

Despite an apocalyptic weather forecast, the sun defied the meteorologists and shone all morning (ok it was a bit blowy, and heat was never a factor, but you can’t have it all).

And what a fantastic morning. From the feedback everyone, adults and children, absolutely loved pitting their sporting wits against different generations. St Marys won the inaugural trophy, (we plan to make it an annual event), and everyone got a medal presented by our wonderful sponsors Full Circle Funerals , who paid for just about everything!

And I wouldn’t mind a pound for every adult that came up to me and remarked at how lovely, respectful and well behaved all the youngsters were.

Perhaps one quote from someone who wasn’t even playing, summed it up so nicely

“Great fun, even as a spectator. Lovely to see everyone joining in and enjoying themselves, and talking, and helping each other”

The aim had been to bring together all generations in a festival of walking sport, with everyone playing together to compete on a level playing field (literally!) to the same rules, with the same goals of getting some exercise, having some fun and making new friends.

Job done, can’t wait for the next one!

We are very grateful to The Sported Foundation for their support in helping us deliver a Walking Football and Sporting Reminiscence Event at Armley Leisure Centre on Monday, 20th April 2026.

This funding allows us to provide a welcoming two-hour session for older adults, including those living with dementia, combining gentle physical activity with opportunities to reconnect through shared sporting memories. Participants can take part in a walking football taster session, a slower-paced, non-contact version of the game that requires no running or prior experience.

Alongside this, we will host sporting reminiscence activities to encourage people to share stories and memories from sport that spark conversation and social connection. The session will also include accessible activities such as Boccia, gentle movement, and coordination exercises; family members and carers are warmly encouraged to join.
