FROM RAPIDES TO LIGHTNINGS (How did I get here!)

Phil Gallagher

Phil left school in 1964 to start as a trainee airborne survey camera operator. 1967 first overseas trip to Nigeria followed by six years all over Africa, mostly the former British colonies.

1973 left as a result of declining work due to US satellites killing off conventional air surveys, and did temporary three months in Germany with Plan Und Karte in Dusseldorf.

Returned to the UK and was recruited [Jan 74] as Fast Jet Reconnaissance Instructor on BAE/EE Lightnings 13 Sqdn Dhahran + Sqdn detachments to Khamis Mushait, Tabuk and Taif. After two years Phil converted to photographer {with shift and overtime payments they earned more money}. After eight years,1982 back to the UK and he became senior photographer for GEC Marconi Defence Systems. - just in time for the Falklands War.

All supporters of aviation are welcome to become members of DA&HG, a not-for-profit organisation that has prevented closure of the airfield three times and opened up the airfield and its facilities for civilian use. We are also determined to preserve the aviation heritage of the local area, encompassing HMS Daedalus, Fort Grange, Fleetlands and associated sites. https://daedalusaviation.org/join-us/

Airfields around the country are categorised as brownfield sites making them attractive for development of housing estates.

The future of aviation is bright! Nothing quite like spending time with fellow aspiring pilots at the flight school cafe, sharing stories of the skies we'll soon conquer. The thrill of new discoveries, friendships formed, and adventures on the horizon make all the studying and simulator hours worthwhile. Though the road ahead is long, we'll get there together.
