Ten days ago in the sun: Katrina leading a creative workshop to practice natural plant dyeing together in prep for a workshop we'll be offering in Lancaster on October 3rd.

A mix of pictures:
> painting soy cream patterns on calico as placemats for Danni's wedding;
> making up 4 dyes with local madder, brown onions, avocado stones, avocado skins;
> cooking up alder cones and also crushing raw flowers (dahlia, coreopsis, goldenrod & more) for a whole palette of drawing inks;
> juggling timings, staying observant and sharing ideas.

We'll post pictures of the finished dyed calico and of course booking-in details for the October workshop.
Like us, you'll love this hands-on exploration of natural colour plus kitchen waste & garden chemistry - and appreciate Katrina's brilliant tips, hacks and magic!

What a busy month of transition July has been - we've reached the school holidays & we've said goodbye to the World Cup but not to extreme heat. We have a new Prime Minister. Amidst all that and more we haven't posted here: our apologies!

For Sewing Cafe Lancaster, our public sessions were all in the first half of the month.
Three of the regular activities we contribute to or host went really well: Beer & Yarn on 7/7, Marsh Mending on 8/7 and the monthly Repair-a-thon on 14/7 at LAMM

An extra event was the Morecambe Bay Curriculum annual conference at Lancaster University on 3/7. We took along a stand all about involving the community in natural dyeing. What a diverse and fascinating day and we had so many valuable conversations - thanks to the organisers for inviting us. Some photos with this post.

Many of us went to the National Festival of Making in Blackburn on 4/7. Simply wonderfully inspiring!

For the rest of July our WhatsApp group has been active - please get in touch if you would like to join. Plus we've been looking after our natural dye garden at Claver Hill.

We're planning participative SCL sessions for August and into autumn: we'll be sure to give you notice.
All welcome, beginnner or expert!

That was a very busy and rewarding week - thanks to all who we met when mending or creating new things at the Repair-A-Thon on Monday, at Marsh Mending on Wednesday and at the FoodFutures: North Lancashire Summer Market on Friday.

Plus some other meetings and workshops happened in between, including gardening on the Dye Plants plot at Claver Hill and our always welcoming and enjoyable termly mending and making workshops with students from Lancaster University, organised by LUSU Green.

We'll share one photo from Friday, when a man in armour came to the stands in the Market Place to help celebrate Lancaster's birthday. Thinking back 900 years we guessed that he would certainly be wearing naturally dyed wool or linen garments beneath the armour. We should have asked.
