The Toastmaster of the Evening introduces each item on the agenda and gets to hand out awards at the end of the meeting. They are responsible for keeping the meeting on time and making adjustments, if necessary, to make that happen.

For beginners, this role is a great introduction. Our agenda is hosted privately, online, so we can print it off for our meetings and the Toastmaster of the Evening, at the very least, only needs to introduce each role, and see each person exit the stage. Basically, they just go down the agenda.

For more advanced people, they can bring a theme and tie the meeting into that theme. It can be something straight or something silly.

What this role does bring, is stage time. The more stage time you get, the more you get to practice standing up and speaking - there's nothing more important - stage time, stage time stage time. Practice, practice, practice.

We time all of our speeches whether they are introductions, planned speeches, impromptu speeches, evaluations or reports. We time everything!

Every meeting has a set agenda, each item needs to finish on time otherwise the meeting finishes late. Sometimes we have to find ways to mitigate the fact that something took too long.

The idea is that we finish the meeting on time and members get a sense of time while they speak. It's good discipline for people and it flows through to their professional life.

The Time Keeper makes a note of timings for each thing and delivers a report so we all know how we did.

For most of us, when we started doing this it was extremely nerve-racking to stand up and speak in public. We get there in the end. This was a Toastmasters Division conference that we held down the road at St. Ives Golf Club.

Some people are horrified at the idea of standing up and giving a speech, but sometimes it can be great fun, too. Our Toastmasters education includes humourous speeches, if you want to give it a go. To be honest, we tend to find that everyone is funny some of the time, and the odd one or two people are funny all of the time.

Impromptu speaking can be great fun, especially if the topic leads to some humour, but what it does very well, is it prepares us for those moments when someone puts you on the spot and you have to speak, without warning.

The rules are easy, try to talk for more than one minute and aim to finish in two minutes. If you don't know what to say, or run out of things to say, you are allowed to change the subject to anything you want. Just try to fill the time.

Run a stopwatch on your phone now and give it a try.

Try to use the Word of the Day as many times as you can today.

At Toastmasters meetings, the Word of the Day encourages members to incorporate new vocabulary in impromptu or prepared speeches, enhancing fluency, creativity, and stage confidence.
