👕🌍 Can We Break Up With Fast Fashion? 🌍👖
The fashion industry is one of the world’s biggest polluters — from textile waste to microplastics in our rivers. But small changes can make a BIG difference 💚
At St Ives Eco Café we explored:
✨ Second Hand September
✨ Swapping, repairing & upcycling clothes
✨ Sustainable fabrics like h**p and pineapple leather 🍍
✨ Reducing microplastics from washing machines
💡 Simple ideas to try:
👗 Buy more second hand using apps like Vinted
🧵 Join Sew, Mend & Save to repair and upcycle clothes
🫧 Wash less often, do full loads, and consider a microplastic filter like PlanetCare
🌱 Try eco-friendly washing products like Smol or Ikigi
We also discussed: what books to read, to find out more 📚
📢 The possibility of Making brands responsible for textile waste through Extended Producer Responsibility
📢 The dropped washing machine filter bill — the UK is behind France
📢 Writing to MPs and councillors about textile waste and asking if they’ve watched The People’s Emergency Briefing?
And the big question…
♻️ What CAN we do with old rags and damaged clothes?

🍎 Why Food Waste Recycling Matters ♻️
With England’s new food waste collections rolling out, it’s more important than ever to understand why it matters.
When food waste goes to landfill, it rots and releases methane — a greenhouse gas over 25 times more harmful than CO₂. By separating it, most of it can be turned into energy through anaerobic digestion ⚡
💡 Did you know? A full food waste caddy can generate enough energy to power an LED bulb for 24 hours!
Learn more about the impact and benefits here: 👉 https://defraenvironment.blog.gov.uk/2025/12/18/food-waste-recycling-big-wins-from-little-bins/

Small actions at home can make a big difference 🌍

‘Recycle, the possibilities are endless’ as the old adverts used to tell us.   By sending your used metal cans, glass bottles and cardboard boxes for recycling, these materials can be turned into valuable new items and kept out of landfill, helping to protect our environment.   ...
