Plant donations needed for Holywell Town Centre

Ability Grows is helping to refresh some of the planters around Holywell Town Centre ahead of Wales in Bloom this July.

We have already made a start with some of the planters, working alongside our service users to tidy, clear and replant them. It has been a lovely opportunity to get involved in the local community, learn new skills, and help make the town centre look brighter and more welcoming.

We are now looking for donations of suitable plants to help complete the displays.

We would be very grateful for:

Bedding plants
Colourful flowering plants
Trailing plants
Pollinator-friendly varieties
Hardy plants suitable for outdoor public planters

If you have any healthy plants you can spare, please message Ability Grows or drop them off at the shop.

Every donation will help make Holywell look its best, while also supporting the community work of Ability Grows and The Clocktower.

Thank you for helping us grow a greener, brighter Holywell.

It’s not just about plants… it’s about people

Over recent weeks, our team at Ability Grows have been out in the community, helping to plant and maintain displays across Holywell Town Centre and the council planters in Greenfield.

Through all kinds of weather—rain, wind, and the occasional burst of sunshine—everyone has shown real commitment, turning up, getting stuck in, and taking pride in their work.

Alongside this, we’ve also been supporting people locally by delivering plants, offering advice, and helping with plant care in their own spaces—bringing a bit of greenery (and confidence) directly to people’s doors.

These activities don’t just brighten spaces—they create opportunities for the individuals we support to build confidence, learn new skills, and feel part of something meaningful within their community 💚

Every plant we work with tells a story.
From planting up displays to ongoing care and supporting others to look after their plants, it’s all part of developing real, hands-on skills in a supportive and inclusive environment.

We're all really happy that we've been awarded the community champion of the month by Becky Gittins MP

We're coming up to a year since we opened and we've all learned alot in the process.

A simple hands-on activity showing how to separate snake plant pups and turn one crowded plant into several healthy new ones.

Practical skills, real results, and a moment to feel proud 💚

From day one, Carl has been by our side — sanding, painting, shifting furniture, and helping build the shop from scratch. If something needed doing, Carl was there.

Carl might have a learning disability, but his contribution has never been limited — he acts as our eyes when a second pair is needed and brings sharp attention to detail in everything he does.

As Ability Grows has developed since opening in February, so has Carl’s role. These days he’s proudly taken on the title of Chief Bug Spotter — learning to identify pests and soon to be trained in how to treat them using organic methods.

He says being part of Ability Grows gives him great purpose and he looks forward to his days here. His favourite job is helping customers and keeping the place looking tidy — and his favourite plant is our Imperial Green because of its big, bold leaves.

Thanks, Carl — we truly couldn’t do it without you.

A big thank you to Holywell Town Council for their generous donation of Apple iPads to Ability Grows.

These will be used by our service users to enhance their learning and enjoyment of plants through apps such as Plant Parent and other plant identification tools. The iPads will support hands-on learning, helping participants build confidence and knowledge while engaging with horticulture in an accessible and enjoyable way.

We were recently donated a giant corn plant that was just too big to keep in the shop. Instead of letting it go to waste, we’ve given it a new lease of life by turning it into lots of smaller plants.

These cuttings will root, grow, and thrive — and by next year, they’ll be ready for sale at Ability Grows.

A big thank you to Amy, who joined us for her very first day and helped us with the process and to Coral Hansom for her kind donation.

Great News for Ability Grows!

We’re thrilled to announce that Ability Grows has been awarded £20,000 in funding from The National Lottery Community Fund.

This funding will allow us to grow what we’ve already started — expanding our indoor plant shop, horticultural learning activities, and attending more community events where we can share what we do. The project not only provides a therapeutic, eco-focused space but also creates meaningful opportunities for people to gain skills, confidence, and a sense of achievement.

Ability Grows is part of The Clocktower, and many of its service users are closely involved in helping the project thrive. Their participation is at the heart of what makes Ability Grows so special.

This support is more than just financial — it’s a strong foundation for sustainable growth and a recognition of the impact we’re making in the community.

A huge thank you to The National Lottery Community Fund, and to everyone who continues to support us. Together, we’re helping our community grow.

We’re currently in need of plastic pots — any size, any shape.

If you’ve got some tucked away in a shed or garage, we’ll gladly give them a new lease of life. Every pot helps us continue the work we do here at Ability Grows, offering therapeutic, hands-on activity for our service users.

Donations can be dropped off during shop hours or left safely outside the door if we’re not in.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mike has been busy potting up some of the beautiful cuttings donated to the shop recently. Every donation—whether it’s a cutting, a spare pot, or a bag of compost—goes a long way in helping us do what we do.

These moments aren’t just about plants. They offer meaningful activity, build confidence, and help create a sense of routine and achievement for the people who take part.

Thank you to everyone who’s dropped something off. If you’ve got spare houseplants, pots or saucers at home, we’ll always put them to good use.
