Disability Action Yorkshire We aim to find solutions for disabled people whatever their aspirations

We are a charity and social enterprise, providing services that create opportunities for disabled people to live the lifestyle of their choosing.

We offer work based training which enables all disabled young people and adults of working age to gain the skills and experience needed for employment with individual and personalised packages of training to help them to enter employment with our Employment Support service.

Disability Action Yorkshire are the onsite care and support provider at St Roberts Grove which is a supported living development located off Claro Road in Harrogate. The development contains a large staff room for on-site support and communal garden areas. Each property contains technology such as door entry and a nurse call system to aid independence for tenants, as well as communal safety features such as platform lifts and a sprinkler system. Tenancy is not dependant on using Disability Action Yorkshire's care service.

We provide disability awareness training, access audits and advice for all businesses, whatever their size, and all of their employees. We also deliver a specialist training course for new and existing taxi drivers to demonstrate the importance of disability awareness, explain what is meant by disability and enable them to support disabled customers, ensuring a great service as well as looking at the law in relation to disability.

90 years of supporting independent living across Yorkshire - and we’re just getting started!

Next year marks a massive milestone birthday for Disability Action Yorkshire. To celebrate nine decades of removing barriers, championing inclusion and empowering disabled people we have launched our 90 in 90 campaign.

We are searching for 90 community champions to help us mark the occasion by raising £90 each during our 90th year.
Whether you want to take on a personal fitness challenge, host an office coffee morning, organise a school bake sale or put together a team quiz night, your £90 will help us collectively raise over £8,000. Every penny raised goes directly into funding our local services, independent living support and training programmes.

It is a bite-sized fundraising goal designed so that anyone can get involved and make a genuine difference.

We are really pleased to see the government’s announcement expanding the Jobs Guarantee scheme to fast-track young disabled people and those with long-term health conditions into paid work.

With the number of young disabled people out of work doubling over the last decade, earlier access to paid opportunities, tailored mentoring, and practical support can be life-changing.

Getting young people through the door, however is only the first step. For these roles to create lasting change, workplaces must be genuinely accessible, backed by essential schemes like Access to Work and focused on long-term career progression rather than short-term targets.

Real inclusion is about building meaningful careers and giving young disabled people the confidence to show what they can do. We look forward to supporting local employers across Yorkshire to ensure these opportunities lead to truly inclusive, supportive working environments.

Reflecting on an inspiring evening of empathy, action and practical inclusion.

Last week, our Partnership and Inclusion Lead, Poppy Woodcock and Access and Inclusion team member, Georgia Baxter-Craik represented Disability Action Yorkshire at Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce’s September meeting at the beginning of National Inclusion Week.

The evening focused on moving Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) out of policy documents and into everyday workplace practice.

One takeaway rang loud and clear throughout the night: inclusion is not about costly overhauls or doing someone a favour.

Poppy and Georgia demonstrated how simple, low-cost reasonable adjustments can break down barriers. From flexible working patterns and screen adjustments to building open, psychologically safe environments, small changes allow disabled employees to perform at their best.

Inclusion doesn't happen by accident - it happens when businesses listen first, ask what people need to flourish, and commit to continuous improvement.

Next year, Disability Action Yorkshire will be celebrating a milestone - our 90th anniversary!

To celebrate this incredible history and look ahead to the future, we will be launching our 90 in 90 campaign!

We are looking for 90 kind volunteers to raise £90 each in honour of our 90th year.

From Illinois to Yorkshire: How a Classic British Farce Supports Our Mission 🎭🇺🇸

In the late 1990s, celebrated English playwright Philip King generously bequeathed the royalties of his plays - including his famous hit farce See How They Run - to Disability Action Yorkshire. Decades later, his legacy continues to provide a steady foundation of support for our vital community services.

We were absolutely delighted to receive a message across the Atlantic from the North Riverside Players, a community theatre group based in Illinois, USA!

After wrapping up a fantastic run of See How They Run, Board Member Sue Matulionis reached out to share a photo from the show. Disability Action Yorkshire even featured in the event programme, telling the American audience all about our work and how Philip King's gift lives on.

A huge thank you to the cast, crew and production team at North Riverside Players.
