We are a charity and social enterprise, providing services that create opportunities for disabled people to live the lifestyle of their choosing.

We offer work based training which enables all disabled young people and adults of working age to gain the skills and experience needed for employment with individual and personalised packages of training to help them to enter employment with our Empl

oyment Support service.

Disability Action Yorkshire are the onsite care and support provider at St Roberts Grove which is a supported living development located off Claro Road in Harrogate. The development contains a large staff room for on-site support and communal garden areas. Each property contains technology such as door entry and a nurse call system to aid independence for tenants, as well as communal safety features such as platform lifts and a sprinkler system. Tenancy is not dependant on using Disability Action Yorkshire's care service.

We provide disability awareness training, access audits and advice for all businesses, whatever their size, and all of their employees. We also deliver a specialist training course for new and existing taxi drivers to demonstrate the importance of disability awareness, explain what is meant by disability and enable them to support disabled customers, ensuring a great service as well as looking at the law in relation to disability.

This week (15th - 21st June) is Learning Disability Week, an important opportunity to raise awareness, challenge preconceptions and celebrate the incredible achievements of people with learning disabilities across our region.

At Disability Action Yorkshire, our daily focus is on empowerment. Through our tailored training service at Hornbeam Park, our supported housing, and our inclusive work placement schemes, we collaborate with individuals to develop vital life skills, build confidence and secure meaningful employment.

We believe that a learning disability should never limit someone’s aspirations. Next in our new series helping you get to know the people behind Disability Action Yorkshire, we are shifting the spotlight to the vital work of our Care and Support Manager.

For Karen Minteh, who oversees both a supported living location and our domiciliary care service, there is also no such thing as a typical day. Her role is a busy mix of reviewing care schedules, conducting assessments, and handling safeguarding concerns - a variety focused entirely on promoting customer wellbeing, dignity and independence.

Karen’s path to social care actually began in hairdressing, where she first enjoyed building meaningful relationships with people. Recognising that she wanted a career where she could make a positive difference, she entered the care sector as an assistant and steadily progressed into senior management. Today, she remains incredibly passionate about helping individuals live independently, driven by a belief that leadership should always focus on empowering customers and building their long-term skills.

Reflecting on her career, Karen points to helping customers transition out of residential care or childhood homes into independent supported living as a standout achievement. Witnessing individuals grow in confidence and enjoy a much better quality of life behind their own front door makes her work immensely rewarding.

Her focus on creating opportunities also extends to her staff team through regular training, mentorship, and professional development. When she does find a moment of free time, Karen loves to travel and experience new places, keep active with fitness classes at the gym, or enjoy a long walk outdoors in the sunshine with her family and friends.

At Disability Action Yorkshire, we are incredibly proud to be long-standing members of Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce.

Being part of the Chamber has been immensely beneficial to our organisation. It provides a fantastic platform to connect with the local business community, build meaningful partnerships, and share our passion for creating a more inclusive district.

Our Chief Executive, Jackie Snape represents Disability Action Yorkshire at Chamber meetings, and serves as a Vice President on the Chamber's management team. If you have attended a Chamber meetings, you will recognise Jackie as one of the friendly, welcoming faces at the door, ready to give you your lanyard!

We firmly believe that a strong local economy thrives on collaboration between the business and voluntary sectors, and the Chamber does a brilliant job of bringing those worlds together.

It is fantastic to see positive steps being taken towards creating more accessible, pedestrian-friendly spaces in our region. The community campaign to extend pedestrian-only hours on Ripon's historic Kirkgate has reached its 500-signature milestone, meaning it will now be considered for a formal public consultation by North Yorkshire Council on 4th June.

At Disability Action Yorkshire, we fully support this initiative. Public spaces should be welcoming and navigable for everyone, and it is incredibly encouraging to see disability campaigners, including Jeremy Dunford from the Ripon Disability Forum, leading the conversation on how pedestrianisation can actively improve accessibility.

As highlighted in the proposals, removing vehicles creates a prime opportunity for some practical "solution-finding." Relaying a smooth, level strip down the centre of the historic street would allow wheelchair users, those with mobility aids, and parents with prams to navigate the area safely without having to dodge vehicles or pavement obstructions like tables and chairs. Combined with a sensible review of Blue Badge parking and improved alternative access for residents, this project has the potential to become a blueprint for inclusive heritage streets.

When we design our communities around the needs of people, everyone wins. Accessible streets naturally drive footfall, support local independent businesses, and ensure that disabled residents and visitors can enjoy everything our beautiful district has to offer.

We look forward to seeing this consultation move forward and hope it paves the way for more inclusive town planning across North Yorkshire.

We are pleased to launch a new series of posts to help you get to know the people behind Disability Action Yorkshire, beginning with a look at the journey and vision of our Chief Executive.

For Jackie Snape, who has led our organisation for over 25 years, there is truly no such thing as a typical day. Her role is a dynamic mix of strategic planning, income generation, and tireless campaigning for better access and inclusion - a variety that she says is exactly why she loves the work.

Jackie’s path to the charity sector began in nursing before she moved into health and social care management. When she saw a role at Disability Action Yorkshire two and a half decades ago, she recognised the challenge she had been searching for. Today, she remains as passionate as ever about the sector, driven by a fundamental belief that if an initiative isn’t creating an opportunity to make life better for disabled people, it simply isn’t the right path forward.

Reflecting on her time with us, Jackie points to the transition from residential care to supported housing as a standout achievement. While it was a complex, long-term project, the result - hearing customers speak about the transformation of having "their own front door” - represents the core of her mission.

Her commitment to the Harrogate community extends beyond her daily work. Jackie also chairs the Board of Trustees for the Harrogate Town AFC Community Foundation and serves on the management team of the Harrogate & District Chamber of Commerce. When she does find a moment of free time, she treasures it with her great-grandson or enjoys a long walk, especially if there’s a welcoming pub waiting at the end!
