The Jordan Legacy To improve people's mental wellbeing in communities and the workplace and to work towards a Zero Su***de Society

The problem and our challenge

Globally, more people die by su***de every year than from cancer, heart disease, and diabetes combined. 2016 World Health Organisation (WHO) data counted 800,000 su***de deaths (one every 40 seconds) and with su***de rates rising in many countries, including the UK, over the past 4 years, total global su***de deaths will now be more than 1 million per year. There are

many more su***de attempts (20 times the number of deaths typically) and many family members, friends, colleagues, neighbours, etc traumatised by each death, especially as it often comes as shock news. The reasons people choose to end their lives are often complex and varied. There is often no-one single contributing factor to take this most drastic of actions. What we do know is that many who make su***de attempts do so without letting anyone close to them know they’re considering taking their own life. We must all be aware of the signs, in ourselves and others, and better understand how to take action to save lives – through early identification, early intervention, su***de prevention initiatives, ‘postvention’ support for those experiencing loss, and positive promotion of optimal mental health. Our mission

Most deaths by su***de are preventable, so we must do everything we can to help people who don’t want to die but are feeling they can’t bear the pain of living in their current circumstances. Our mission, in collaboration with others, is to explore and help implement ideas to prevent the practical act of su***de and improve the support available for people who have lost hope and achieve a state where deaths by su***de are rare events. Our Vision

We can envisage an achievable desired state where deaths by su***de are rare events. It’s a huge challenge and a big goal but achievable through prioritised, focused, practical actions:

practical actions to make our communities and workplaces mentally healthy and psychologically safe places;
practical actions to use human intelligence and digital technology for earlier identification and intervention;
practical actions for su***de prevention such as ‘designing out su***de’ in our built environment, education systems, health systems, and support systems for those known to be at risk or in danger (including restricting access to the means of su***de – known to be the most effective practical action to save lives);
practical actions to encourage every hospital, university, council, employer, industry association, professional society, etc to make practical plans for su***de prevention within their spheres of influence. The act of su***de is a practical act – it needs practical actions to prevent it. For urgent assistance visit our Resources page https://thejordanlegacy.com/resources/

The Jordan Legacy is delighted to announce that through our involvement with One Voice One Hope (OVOH), we have entered into a new collaboration with the Global Equality Collective (GEC).

GEC will be developing the new Good Practices Hub - a searchable platform designed to showcase examples of emerging and existing good practice across su***de prevention, intervention and postvention.

It will support those already working in su***de prevention as well as those beginning to engage in this space, by making practical knowledge, approaches and learning easier to discover and share. Our ambition is to launch the first live version on September 10th 2026 - World Su***de Prevention Day.

The Good Practices Hub is funded by The Jordan Legacy through our partnership with The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales and reflects a shared commitment to strengthening collaboration, increasing access to learning and supporting action that may help reduce stigma and prevent future deaths by su***de.

We're looking forward to working with the GEC team and making a difference together 🧡

One Family, One Boat, One Mission.

A remarkable fundraising challenge is being taken on by the Ash family, who lost their husband and father, Robert, to su***de in September 2023.

The family, from Harrogate, are preparing to row the Atlantic Ocean as part of the 'World's Toughest Row' - a 3000 mile challenge to raise funds for Su***de&Co, which provided them with counselling following Robert's death.

They have so far raised an incredible £315,210 with an aim to raise £500,000 - funds which will provide essential support for those bereaved by su***de 💚

Steve yesterday had the privilege of attending Speaker's House at the House of Commons by invitation of the Churchill Fellowship.

The event showcased “A Whole Society Blueprint for Su***de Prevention” and practical learning from Churchill Fellows who travel the world exploring approaches to su***de prevention, intervention and postvention around the world.

Attendees heard powerful speeches from Liz Twist MP and Dr Neil Hudson MP, who highlighted the dedication of Churchill Fellows working hard to make a difference and save lives. They also heard from Nina Jo Smith and Tim Woodhouse, who shared insights from their Fellowship research on su***de prevention in schools and the links between domestic abuse and su***de.

As a parent, would you want your child to be taught about su***de in an age appropriate way and in a safe and supportive environment?

Most health-related learning is delivered through RSHE (Relationships, S*x and Health Education) and PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education).

Regarding mental health specifically, topics discussed include:

👉 Understanding emotions
👉 Recognising and expressing feelings
👉 Mental wellbeing and resilience
👉 Managing stress and pressure
👉 Building self-esteem and confidence
👉 Coping with change, loss and bereavement
👉 Healthy friendships and relationships
👉 Bullying and cyberbullying
👉 Seeking help and support
👉 Identifying trusted adults and support services
👉 Understanding that mental health is a normal part of everyday life
👉 The relationship between physical health and mental wellbeing
👉 Online influences on self-image and wellbeing

From September 2026, su***de and grief training will also be included in the curriculum across all secondary schools in England.

Current guidance from the Department for Education does not require schools to teach a standalone su***de prevention programme. However, the revised RSHE guidance states that schools 'should' consider how to address su***de safely and appropriately where relevant, ensuring staff are trained and that content is age-appropriate and evidence-informed.

We believe su***de education in schools has a vital role to play in helping to reduce the 200+ deaths by su***de of school-aged children every year in the UK. This is why The Jordan Legacy, One Voice One Hope and an inspiring line up of speakers are bringing together experience, evidence, lived insight and practical learning to help schools and teachers feel more confident, informed and supported.

✨ Free online event - Su***de Prevention in Schools
Tuesday June 9th - 9am-6pm: https://lnkd.in/edVA2-vT

The conference comes amid growing concern about young people’s mental health and increasing discussion about the role schools can play in prevention, early intervention and safeguarding, alongside recent changes to education guidance.

Almost 300 people have now signed up!
Please share with those in your networks who would benefit from attending, including teachers, schools, parents and anyone who wants to play a part in reducing su***de deaths - the leading cause of death for young people under 35.

✨Petition to fund a public health campaign to reduce the stigma of su***de✨

There are over 7,000 su***de deaths every year in the UK, and the su***de rate is increasing. One in 13 people will attempt su***de in their lifetime and one in four will have suicidal thoughts.

Evidence shows that stigma surrounding mental health and suicidal thoughts can prevent people from seeking help, talking openly or accessing support at an early stage. Reducing that stigma is an important part of su***de prevention.

A new petition, launched by Philip Pirie - who lost his son to su***de in 2020 - is calling on the UK Government to fund a multi-year public health campaign to reduce the stigma of su***de, including:

👉 National media and social media campaigns
👉 Workplace toolkits and resources
👉 Programmes in schools and universities
👉 Collaboration with the media
👉 Clear signposting to support services
👉 Targeted campaigns for groups at higher risk

The petition highlights that between 2012 and 2022, 73% of people who died by su***de were not mental health service patients. Encouraging open conversations, improving understanding and helping people access support sooner could make a significant difference.

💫 If you agree that more should be done to challenge stigma, encourage help-seeking and reduce the risk of su***de, please consider signing and sharing the petition.: https://lnkd.in/em_MRPXC

🔦 Spotlight on Hope 🔦

This week we are shining a light on Speakeasy Club - 'advocating wellbeing through sport.'

Founded in 2022 by Simon Clarke, who has his own lived experience of mental health struggles, Speakeasy Club is a not-for-profit organisation that uses sport and community spaces to promote mental health awareness, early intervention and su***de prevention, creating environments where people feel safe to be curious, to talk openly and to feel supported without judgement.

Their goal is to provide free mental health resources at every community sports venue worldwide.

Each day in the UK, around 20 people take their own lives - men, women and children.

That's 7,000+ each year.

The ripple effect following each su***de impacts around 135 people.

That means that every year, more than 900,000 people will be newly impacted by a death by su***de.

A bereavement by su***de is often described as 'grief with the volume turned up.' It can evoke a range of complex emotions, from shock, anger and despair to anxiety, confusion and profound sadness.

Those bereaved by su***de are 2-3 times more likely to die by su***de themselves.

Help is at Hand is a guide we'd highly recommend if you have lost someone to su***de, however you are related to the person who took their own life. The guide is supported by Public Health England and the National Su***de Prevention Alliance and has been put together with the help of people who have been bereaved by su***de: https://lnkd.in/eqxWXHP5

We have recently been made aware that the professionally printed version of Help is at Hand is now out of print, and families are being told they can no longer order copies to their homes. Instead, people are being directed to use the digital version or wait until remaining stock of alternative formats has been used.

While the guide remains available to download, access to printed copies is essential. In the immediate aftermath of a su***de, many people are overwhelmed by grief and trauma and may not be able to search for, download or print the information they need. A physical copy, provided through professionals and support services, can make a crucial difference at a time when support is needed most.

If you believe printed copies of Help is at Hand should continue to be provided to everyone bereaved by su***de, please share this message and encourage decision-makers and organisations involved in su***de bereavement support to urgently make printed copies available again.

Thank you 🙏
