At our vibrant community centre in Halifax, we support refugees and people seeking asylum.
🧡 We also run a befriending and integration service.

We are a specialist charity working with people seeking asylum, and new refugees, who are rebuilding their lives in Calderdale. We give people the practical support they need to rebuild their lives with dignity, and offer a range of activities that help people feel happier and more connected. We help with advice on immigration and asylum, and offer one-to-one support with welfare, housing, health, and access to wider services. Renowned for our holistic and person-centred approach, we provide a welcoming, safe and inclusive space. We offer English language classes, training, creative, social, sports and wellbeing activities, trips and volunteering opportunities. Our centre has a free shop, salon, chill out room and garden, and we also refurbish bikes and second-hand tech. On Mondays and Thursdays, we provide a cooked lunch at our Welcome Cafe, which is free and open to everyone. Come and join us sometime! Together we are building a diverse community which challenges injustice and puts the needs and voices of our Centre Members at the heart of our work.

Bousso: Finding Her Way Back to the Stage

“When I act, I forget everything. My problems, my stress and my worries all disappear for a while. It takes me somewhere else. It’s very powerful. It feels like magic.”

For Bousso, returning to the stage meant reconnecting with something she loves.

We support people to reconnect with a part of themselves that may have got lost.

Antonia, our Volunteer Coordinator, reflects on yesterday’s Volunteer Drop-In:

"Yesterday, we held a Volunteer Drop-In with plenty of homemade cake and great conversation. It was wonderful to see such a fantastic turnout and to bring together volunteers from different parts of St Augustine's Centre who don't often get the chance to meet.

Throughout the afternoon, volunteers shared stories about their careers, experiences and future aspirations, as well as discussing ideas for the Centre and wider topics affecting our community. The conversations were thoughtful, insightful and full of mutual learning, with everyone bringing their own unique perspectives and experiences to the table.

One of the most special parts of the day was hearing volunteers recognise and appreciate the contributions of one another. It was clear how much respect they have for the time, skills and energy that fellow volunteers give, and it was lovely to see those connections grow.

The afternoon was a wonderful reminder that volunteering is about more than the tasks we do. It is also about building relationships, sharing experiences and being part of a supportive community. All of our volunteers come from different experiences and backgrounds, and St Augustine's are incredibly lucky to have such a diverse cohort of people who bring their knowledge and skills into our community." 🧡⭐

We brought Centre Member families together for a cosy showing of Disney Pixar’s Coco this half-term, complete with plenty of popcorn.🍿

Half-term can be an especially challenging time for families seeking sanctuary. With school routines on pause, finding affordable activities and covering the extra costs of meals can add additional pressure on an already difficult time.

Creating opportunities for children to play, learn, make memories and simply enjoy time together is so important. We want St Augustine’s to be a place where families can come together and enjoy a little bit of magic, whatever the time of year. ✨

Lots of bubbles, bangs and laughs at yesterday’s Love Science session! 🧪🫧

Our half-term activities got off to a fizzing start as the children became mini scientists - mixing, experimenting and discovering the magic of science.

Yesterday, we attended the Calderdale Anti-Poverty Partnership event at The Kings Centre in Halifax, bringing together organisations, community groups and council teams to share ideas, learn from one another and strengthen our work to tackle poverty and homelessness across Calderdale.

It was a valuable opportunity to connect with other organisations and discuss how we can work together to support people facing financial hardship.

Thank you to everyone involved in bringing organisations together, and to Sarah Richardson and Heidi Waters from Calderdale Council for hosting the programme.

📣 We also shared our new fuel poverty leaflet, highlighting why newly recognised refugees can be particularly at risk of fuel poverty.

With just 42 days to move out of asylum accommodation after being granted leave to remain, people may face unfamiliar energy systems, language barriers and financial pressures as they move into independent accommodation.

Our practical resource aims to raise awareness of these challenges and help service providers understand how they can support people to manage their energy bills, heating systems and household costs.

The resource draws on research by Dr Manon Burbidge at the University of Manchester, including research conducted at St Augustine’s Centre, alongside insights from our team and Centre Members through our Moving On Project.

The project is funded by Lloyds Bank Foundation and delivered in collaboration with Calderdale Valley of Sanctuary and Calderdale Council, working together to address homelessness among newly granted refugees.

National Week of Solidarity to End Immigration Detention | 19–25 October 2026 ‼️🧡

Every day, people are detained under immigration powers in the UK and separated from their families, friends and communities. People can be held for an uncertain length of time, often not knowing when they will be released. The impact reaches far beyond detention centres, causing fear and distress for individuals and the people who care about them.

This week, communities across the country are coming together to call for an end to immigration detention and stand in solidarity with everyone affected.

The government plans to expand detention capacity by 1,000 spaces at Haslar and Campsfield detention centres. Right to Remain warns that this expansion could mean more people experiencing detention and its harmful effects.

At St Augustine’s Centre, we believe everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion and humanity.

We have signed Right to Remain’s “No More Migrant Prisons – These Walls Must Fall” petition, calling on Andy Burnham and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to oppose the planned expansion and stand with people affected by immigration detention.

“What I love most about Walk & Talk is that it connects people. It’s a wonderful chance to make new friends. Walking and talking with others in nature is so good for my physical and mental health. It leaves me feeling calmer and refreshed.” - Zin, Centre Member

Our Walk and Talk group took on the hills of at the end of September. 🍁🍂

It was a lovely day getting out into the countryside and spending much-needed time together. 🧡

We often see people grow in confidence as they come along regularly - they get to know others and start joining in with more activities at the Centre.

A big thank you to our brilliant Walk and Talk volunteers and Active Calderdale The National Lottery and Sport England who make these days happen.
