🌍 Refugee Week 2026: Celebrating Courage

This Refugee Week, we’re celebrating the courage, resilience and contribution of refugees and people seeking sanctuary in our communities.

Starting life in a new country can mean adapting to a different language, culture and way of life. Through our Inclusion and Integration service, Halifax Opportunities Trust supports people to build their English language skills, grow in confidence and become more independent in their everyday lives.

Our classes and activities offer much more than language learning. They provide welcoming spaces where people can make connections, understand their local community and services, share their experiences and develop a greater sense of belonging.

We are proud to work alongside people from many different countries, cultures and backgrounds, helping to create a vibrant and inclusive Calderdale where everyone has the opportunity to learn, contribute and thrive.

This Refugee Week, we celebrate the courage it takes to begin again—and the stronger communities we build when everyone is welcomed.

Spotlight Series: Meet Julie from Bevan Health

This week in our Spotlight Series, we're introducing Julie from Bevan Health.

Julie works as a Healthcare Assistant with the Calderdale Outreach team, helping to deliver inclusive healthcare services to people across the community. She regularly attends clinics at Happy Days Homeless Charity, Ryburn House, Craven Mount, Focus4Hope and St Augustine's, ensuring that healthcare support is accessible to those who need it most.

Through her role, Julie helps connect people with the right services and support, making a real difference to their health and wellbeing.

Julie says:
"Being able to be the link to connect people is an amazing thing. I can make sure that people get support when they need it."

Thank you, Julie, for your dedication, compassion and commitment to supporting communities across Calderdale.

Bursting with pride for the Calderdale Cancer Aware team 💚💚💚

Our Community Impact award winners! 💚

In Calderdale, too many people are diagnosed with cancer at a late stage, with stark health inequalities across the community. The Calderdale Cancer Aware team, in partnership with Halifax Opportunities Trust, is working to change that by supporting people to seek help sooner, take part in screenings, and access vital services.

They’re building trusted relationships in some of Calderdale’s most diverse and underserved communities. From mosque drop-ins to “Chat & Chai” sessions, their culturally sensitive approach is breaking down barriers and opening lifesaving conversations.

This is why we’re so proud to celebrate them as deserving winners in our Professionals Excellence Awards!

A huge well done to the team for their incredible impact, and to all of our amazing finalists for the Community Impact award, which recognises those working with and within communities to raise awareness and improve outcomes for people affected by cancer, with a focus on supporting people who are underserved or experiencing deprivation. 👏
