With the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival almost upon us, we want to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped make this weekend possible. 🙏

First and foremost, an enormous thank you to our incredible committee and wider organising team. The hours, energy and dedication you've given over the past year have been extraordinary, and this festival simply wouldn't happen without you. 👏 👏

We're also so grateful to our performers for bringing the music and passion, to our volunteers for giving their time so generously, and to everyone joining us as a visitor or supporter this weekend. Falmouth is ready for you. 🌊

Of course, events like this don't happen without vital support from our partners and sponsors. A huge thank you to just a few of the many organisations helping make this weekend possible: Falmouth Town Council, UK, Falmouth BID, Southwest Bars and Events, Seasalt Cornwall, The Greenbank Hotel, Sharp's Brewery, Warrens Bakery, The Cornish Store, Falmouth Lifeboat & Falmouth Classics.

See you on the waterfront. âš“

As you all know, the Sea Shanty Festival is one of the biggest weekends of the year for Falmouth businesses, so it's something we're always looking to support.

This year, we've funded a brand new dedicated app for the festival, giving attendees everything they need for the weekend in one place: the full programme, venue information, and performer details, all at their fingertips.

There's also a little incentive to download early. App users will get first access to the full 2026 schedule before it's announced anywhere else, so it's a great way to start building excitement ahead of 12 to 14 June.

Search for the Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival app to download it ahead of the event.

Over the past 6 months we’ve been trying to negotiate some new cross street banner locations for the bottom of Killigrew and the bottom of the High Street. But unfortunately we have not been able to get landlord permissions.

So we decided to use a current site at the very end of Market Street and whilst not perfect location wise, we are pleased to be able to give these streets a little push with a fresh new banner.

Street Lighting Update

Thank you to all the businesses who took the time to share their feedback on the proposed street lighting changes.

Falmouth BID gathered feedback from a wide range of sectors including hospitality, retail, leisure, maritime and major employers such as Falmouth Docks, and formally raised these concerns with Cornwall Council.

What BID highlighted:
- Strong concerns about public safety, particularly for women and staff travelling home late at night
- The impact on Falmouth’s night-time economy, including reduced footfall and people leaving earlier
- The town’s unique characteristics as a university town, 24-hour port, and busy evening destination
- Concerns around CCTV effectiveness and overall perception of safety

What BID asked for:
- Dimming lights instead of full switch-off
- Extending lighting hours to at least 2am
- Keeping key pedestrian routes lit between the town centre, residential areas and the docks
- Introducing the changes as a trial with a review period
- Further engagement with businesses and women’s safety groups

Cornwall Council’s Response:
The Council has confirmed the policy will go ahead as planned:
Residential lights off midnight to 5am Sunday to Thursday
Fridays and Saturdays lights remain on but dimmed
Main routes and key areas stay lit, but dimmed

They state the policy was developed with emergency services, that no increase in crime has been seen in other areas, and that the approach will be monitored.

While they recognise Falmouth’s concerns, the Council says the policy must be applied consistently across Cornwall.

Next Steps
We will continue to work with partners to review the impact of these changes and explore options that support both safety and the vitality of Falmouth’s night-time economy.
