Friday 6 March 2026 Falmouth WI were delighted to welcome Dean Evans to the Council Chamber. Dean came along at very short notice to tell us the story of John Passmore Edwards. Thank you Dean.

John Passmore Edwards was born in a small cottage in Blackwater in 1823. His father was William Edwards, a carpenter and brewer and his mother, Susan Passmore Edwards was a widow from Devon.

He had 3 brothers, all were expected to work for the Brewery. 2 of the boys were tea total.

Dean told us the interesting facts of John's life - too much to tell you here. If you are interested in John's life and philanthropy Google him on the internet. You will be enthralled. All ladies present were delighted with the talk.

Falmouth WI meet weekly in The Council Chamber, Municipal Buildings, The Moor, Falmouth from 1.30pm for 2pm until around 3.30pm. New members are always welcome. Do come along and meet us.

Friday 20 February Falmouth WI welcomed Robert Bond of Perranporth who gave us another excellent talk.

This time Robert told us how he became a Parliamentary Assistant. He had been writing speeches for a while and was asked by an MP if he would work for him. During the course of his 7 years at Parliament he spent his time in an office just below Big Ben. In the beginning it was 4 days a month but gradually became 4 days a week. When people used to write to the MP he worked for, for a tour of the Houses of Parliament it was usually Robert who showed them around.

Falmouth WI meet weekly in the Council Chamber in the Municipal Buildings, The Moor, Falmouth from 1.30pm for 2 pm until around 3.45 pm.

New members are very welcome, come along a give us a try.

Next week we have a members afternoon when we will be, amongst other things, be bringing a photograph of our wedding.

Friday 6 February we had the pleasure of welcoming Jodie Strick from isight Cornwall.

Jodie told us the story of how they are Cornwall's independent sight loss Charity and how they have been providing support to blind and partially sighted people since 1856.

They are based at Newham Road, Truro.

Jodie brought along with her various magnifying glasses including glasses magnified many times which enables people to watch television. Some of our members, as you will see below, tried the glasses on.

Next week we are again meeting in The Atherton Suite. We are then back in the Council Chamber on the 20 February.

We meet every week from 1.30pm for 2pm until around 3.45pm in the Council Chamber, Municipal Buildings, The Moor, Falmouth. New members will be made most welcome.

Last Friday 23 January we welcomed Emma Hughes, The Lady Time Traveller to the Council Chamber.
Emma's talk to us was Women's Roles in the 2nd World War.
Emma was dressed in the Army uniform of the time.
She told us about all the different organisations including The ATS, 15,000 applications, 1,000 accepted in April 1939, Women's Royal Naval Service, Women's Auxiliary Air Force was formed in April 1918, non combat roles, by law women couldn't fire a gun. It took until 1980 for women to fire a gun.
To defend themselves they had a stick and a whistle.
The last lady to die in the ATS was an 18 year old in 1942.
Bletchley, Special Operations Executive, women were allowed to join SOE in 1942. The Land Girls were disbanded after World War 1 in 1919. They were formed again by the beginning of WW2. Land Girls were the worst paid. WVS was an unpaid roll.

Thank you Emma for a lovely afternoon, we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Friday 19 December was our final WI meeting for the year in the Council Chamber.
After singing Jerusalem we heard someone knocking on the door. It turned out to be Father Christmas bringing presents for all members present. Our President Carolyn sang Christmas songs while the presents were handed around in a pass the parcel way. Everyone was delighted with their present.
We then played 2 games of bingo. Shirley, Elizabeth and Mercia (2) were all winners and collected a small ornament to go on the Christmas tree.
Lin then showed us how to make Christmas crackers. Mince pies and cream were served to our members. Some also had a drink of Baileys.
