Guy Pullen, the Standen Fruit Farm Orchard manager has been busy pruning some of the oldest trees in the 55 acre site.

But what do you do with the huge amounts of wood that comes off the trees?

Here, Guy explains what he's been doing, combining maintenance of the trees with improving hedging and being highly sustainable.

Spring has definitely arrived at Standen Orchard with the first early purple orchid spotted, along with bluebells. It's a magical time of year as the orchard wakes from its long winter hibernation.

We will be posting more news from the heritage orchard over the coming weeks, and keeping you posted on events for the year including the renowned autumn Apple Day (yes, we know it's only just spring time but we plan ahead!).

We're having our first Volunteer Day of 2026 this Thursday 5th February. We'll be collecting and lining up the pruning from the apple trees ready for chipping. If you have any time Thursday please come along and join us any time between 10.00h and 14.00h. Bring gloves, sturdy boots or wellies, waterproofs and protective eye wear. We'll have some of our lovely apple juice to quench your thirst. See you there.

A big ‘Thank you’ to all of you who helped to make our Apple Day celebrations in the Standen Street orchard fun, lively and special. We enjoyed sitting on hay bales listening to the live band, sampling freshly pressed apple juice and cider, being tempted by local crafts, trying our hand at archery, chatting to the many visitors and plot holders who’d come from near and afar, and picking LOTS of apples! We are counting down to this year's Apple Day on Sunday 12 October - it's a celebration of all things apple and countryside, from archery to cider, local food to handicrafts, and lots of entertainment for the kids. Exciting news: the annual Standen Orchard Apple Day will take place on Sunday 12 October!

We're on the look out for stallholders to be part of this vibrant community event! Whether you sell fresh produce, make handmade crafts or unique gifts, we'd love to hear hear from you.

We've got some amazing vendors already lined up who are looking forward to meeting the visitors on the day who come from across the south-east of England to see the 50+ acre heritage orchard, pick fruit, and enjoy the entertainment.
