SSAFA Devon We are the Devon branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, providing trusted support to our Forces and their families.

If you are serving or have had one day's paid service in the armed forces, you are eligible for help from the SSAFA. This includes National Servicemen and Reservists. Families; Wives,widows and dependents (while still in full-time education, unless they have special needs which could make them dependent after that age). Approximately 10 million people are eligible for help from SSAFA. Devon has strong historic ties with the military and 1000 service leavers settle in Devon each year. 73,000 veterans live in Devon with 20,000 in Plymouth. SSAFA supports serving personal, veterans and their families every day. We offer practical, emotional and financial support to meet individual needs through our network of trained volunteers and professional staff:
-Experienced, non-judgmental and friendly advice
-Financial assistance, in association with other charities and benevolent funds
-Help for those with additional needs for equipment or home redevelopment
-Emotional support for the lonely, ill or bereved

Once again The Baton is supporting SSAFA Devon's Christmas Hamper scheme with a grant of £400. These hampers are delivered to the Veteran Community, across the county of Devon, just in time for Christmas.

We're delighted to see the impact of the 📺 Smart TV at TASS Armed Forces Veterans Hub recently funded through the generous support of our SSAFA Devon branch.

Already, the screen is supporting a growing Veterans' Breakfast Club and the development of a new Armed Forces Veterans Hub, helping veterans access information, advice and guidance within their community.

The smart TV has also helped deliver engaging and interactive Digital Lives sessions, including recent presentations for an Alzheimer's Carers Group supporting veterans and their families. The new technology allows for live demonstrations, videos and presentations that make important safety and digital awareness messages more accessible to those who need them most.

0930 on a sunny Saturday morning saw us setting up in the Market Square, Sidmouth with the help of Richard and James Henderson, Sidmouth Troop, Devon Army Cadet Corps and our man in Sidmouth, Richard Waring. We were also joined by Dr Richard Davis, the new Chairman of the Sidmouth Branch of the Royal British Legion.

Throughout the day we saw a large number of Veterans, many of whom had their own story to tell about their service and some with experience of support from SSAFA. One local Veteran was very insistent that, had it not been for the support that he received from SSAFA he would not be in the position he is today.

The general public were very supportive of our Armed Forces and appreciative of our presence in the Market Square.

It was a great honour listening to and sharing the Veterans’ stories - this is what being a SSAFA Volunteer is all about.

We are pleased to share information about the new Cultivate and Connect Workshop Programme, delivered in partnership by the Gordon Messenger Centre, the Defence Garden Scheme, The Poppy Factory and the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity. This collaboration brings together a wealth of expertise to provide a high-quality programme focused on wellbeing, skills development, and community connection.

It is a monthly initiative designed to bring people together through nature-based activities, gardening, and wellbeing-focused sessions.

The aim of this programme is to:

Improve mental health and wellbeing through structured, nature-based activity
Reduce social isolation by creating opportunities for connection and peer support
Build confidence and practical skills in gardening and outdoor activity
Encourage sustained engagement in positive, healthy routines
Strengthen links between partner organisations and the wider community
Gather evidence to demonstrate impact and inform future delivery and potential expansion
Help working aged Veterans back into meaningful employment
Your support and buy-in are vital to the success of this pilot and will help us evidence demand and secure future sustainability of the programme.
