On 15th October there will be a talk on Devonian Forests -
The Devonian Period (420-360 Mya) was the time when the Earth transitioned to be a forested planet. This profound series of biological events can be interpreted through the record of very rare fossil forests to reconstruct the earliest forest ecosystems. Reconstructions of the plants themselves are increasingly well supported due to discoveries of spectacular more or less complete plants and trees.
This talk will examine fossil forests from New York, Svalbard, China, Greenland and west Sommerset to demonstrate how this transition took place, and its significance for Earth History.

We had a brilliant Annual Conference last Saturday at the Conference Centre at Buckfast Abbey. A fascinating range of talks in the morning ranging from Heritage Stone to Beryl Cook was followed in the afternoon by the installation of our new President Camilla Hampshire. She gave a wide-ranging and informative talk on 'The Shaping of Devon's Museums: People and Place' which was greatly appreciated by the audience. DA members will have the benefit of reading the address in full in the next edition of our Transactions.

The Devonshire Association's Buildings Section had a brilliant visit yesterday to Bradley Manor a stunning medieval manor house with 13th, 15th, 18th and 19th century parts. Many of the original features are still in place and have been lovingly conserved by a succession of its former owners and now by the National Trust. The number of wow factors from the medieval wall decorations, to the 15th century chapel and hall are quite remarkable for a building of this size.
