There are still places available for the fascinating talk by author Tom Hughes who is travelling all the way from America to speak about his recently published book 'A Shattered Idol: The Lord Chief Justice and His Troublesome Women' on 20 May at The Mint, Exeter.

The Coleridge family of Ottery St Mary is known around the world in part because of the poetic genius of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, but also because of his nephew Sir John Taylor Coleridge and great-nephew, Lord Chief Justice John Duke Coleridge, the first Baron Coleridge (1820-94).

Tom Hughes has written the first complete account of the separate but nearly simultaneous domestic crises that overshadowed the last decade-plus of his lordship's life.

We had a brilliant day on Saturday at for our President Nick Powe's Symposium on ‘The People of Devon and Their Identity: From Palaeolithic Roots to Tourism'. Thank you Nick and to our fantastic speakers. Our day took us from early cave dwellers, to the Dumnonii, through medieval cultural exchange, to the Teignmouth Amazons and thence to the formation of the English Riviera brand.
So much erudition and a cream tea! All in the beautiful surroundings of Torquay Museum.
